listed animal numbers?

albking Mar 20, 2007 03:57 PM

Hopefully this isn't a stupid question, but i'm new to owning snakes and i've been looking around at different types. In the classifieds and when people list snakes I sometimes see numbers such as 1.0, 4.2 etc. I was just wondering if these numbers have significant meaning and if so what is it?

The numbers refer to the sex of the animals. The number to the left of the decimal is males, and the number to the right is females. Thus 4.2 would mean 4 males and 2 females.

On a side note, if they add another decimal, it means hatchlings of undetermined sex. For example 0.0.2 means 2 unsexed babies.

Yes, they are very significant!, the first number represents a male,....females are after the decimal point....so if I had three male, and two female California Kings for sale, it would be as follows 3.2 Cal. Kings for sale....also, sometimes you see a third digit as well, this represents un-sexed individuals.

Those are sex ratio numbers. The first being the number of males, the second being that of females. Occasionally you'll see a third and those are unsexed individuals. So for example 2.3.1 equates to two males, three females and one unsexed individual. You'll see the third number mostly with lizards as they can be harder to sex when young. Nice to see you getting into kingsnakes.
