Question about follicle reabsorption

ronin1360 Mar 20, 2007 04:22 PM

So I have a female who bred 3 times so far this year, with her last copulation occurring in December. I palpated her this morning and, to my surprise, I felt four tiny follicles.

Anyway, my question is, should I be worried about her reabsorbing her follicles since it's so late in the season or can I expect eggs from her? She is still being introduced to a male but she hasn't bred in months. Should I keep her in cold temps for a bit longer (I had planned on raising temps back up this weekend)?

Any insight would be fantastic!

dude it's not so late in the season. many/most breeders that I talk with are still introducing males and will be for several more months. Think about it, by daytona there are still alot of babies that haven't been hatched or even layed. I bring temps up march 1st but that is what I do. We are still getting breeding activity going on with our first couple of clutches do to be laid within the week and some females that haven't even been bred yet. Good luck on producing with her and don't give up so soon.

Thanks for the help and trust me when I say that I have NOT given up! Nothing would make me happier than to see this girl drop her first clutch this year...

So what does cause follicles to become reabsorbed and is there anything that one can do to prevent this from happening, besides continuing to introduce females to a male? For example, should I raise her temps along with everyone else or should I make it a point to keep her in dropped temps for a bit longer to encourage more folicular growth?

PS: Who have you bred your striped vanilla to so far this season? Can't wait to see some more vanilla combos this year...

I have been told that damage to the follicles could cause them to be absorbed. This dmg could be caused from feeding (during constriction which could be why most go off-feed during this time of the year) and by over palpating them. There are probably many other reasons that follicles could be absorbed, just think of anything that could stress the animal should not be done. I wish you the best of luck with your season.

and an answer to your other question. Our striped vanilla has bred a pastel female, a cinny female and a couple odd normals. One of the females is due to lay any day now and i'm getting tired of waiting, lol. I didn't go as low on the temps this year as i normally do so we'll see how that goes.
