My first monitor

lemonhead Aug 12, 2003 05:06 PM

Hello,

I picked up a black throat @ a reptile show last weekend. I have always liked the look of them, but I have never had a monitor (I do have 5 Iguanas & 18 Large Boids). There does not seem to be any definite answers on how often to feed these guys. Any help would be appreciated. He is a juvenile (about 24", I have been dropping about 10-15 large crickets into his tank each AM & in the evenings, I have been switching between chicken livers, mice & baby chicks. I also usually give him 20-30 king meal worms each night. Is this too much food? I am used to the Iguaas who eat daily. I dont wnat to over feed him, but I also dont want him to be hungry. He does eat all of this with the exeception of maybe 2-3 crickets. Should he be fed every day?

Thanks For The Help

Lemon

Feed juveniles as much and as often as they show hunger signs. You cant go wrong with a diet besed on primarilly rodents.

My BT was hatched in early March, is currently over 3ft and eating med rats.

Good luck, and good I must say what a fine choice of Monitor.

I have just recently been given a Savannah Monitor. She is fairly young. I have found that there are several really good websites on monitor care. One thing I have learned and must be careful of is that monitors will eat and eat and eat. They will eat as much as you give them. Have fun with your new monitor!
