oger6 Mar 20, 2007 05:49 PM

last week 3 of my 7 easterns came up, we then had some snow/ice during the past week, today when i came back from work one of the turtles was just spread on dead on the other side from were she was hibernating. Today it was in the low 50's. Any ideas/sugestions? I had water out for her to soak in, she was so healthy looking last week when i saw her.

thanks

I'm very sorry for your loss.
It may have been the weather, it may have been some illness that'd been brewing for a long time.. there's really no way to know.
If you had a vet do a necropsy that might give you a clue but it may not.
How sad for you.

So sad for your loss.
A few years ago in New England there was a warm March then late March maybe early april temps dropped 30-40 degrees overnight with some freezing rain and a little snow. I found a dead one in the woods she had tried to dig back under but was frozen. I can only guess thats why she died but her weight was good and no signs of injury. So I quess thats the natural order of things at the ends of their range. Its exciting to see them get up after winter naps but it's sometimes better to cover them with lots of leaves after they dig in and make them wait till mid april early may to get up if you live where it could freeze quickly. Or bring ones in that get up when it is going to be freezing sometimes they'll dig back down only a little and get respirotory problems.
