my old female sulfur

johnantny Mar 20, 2007 06:07 PM

she is 14 years old, gravid again with infertiles. she dumps an average of 20 eggs a clutch, with 29 being her most in one nest. it is sad that i could not get her and a male together, but if i do so again, it will be with babies to raise-up. i will post the nesting if i catch it. also, it wouldn't hurt to incubate the nice ones even though they are "infertile". her enclosure is 2 feet deep of leaves and leaf mulch. temps are 150 F hot, 82 F cool end. thanks for looking...

What a remarkable animal John! That is really too bad that you have not had success pairing her up... Have you tried a breeding loan agreement- maybe with someone here on this forum? Those animals are remarkably rare in the wild and captivity- I sure hope others are having better luck as it would be terrible for them to become another memory in the reptile world. Best to you- Mike

Hi Mike,

thanks for the message. I have gone the breeding loan thing with 2 people on this forum, as well as going it on my own with a couple of sulfur males. the problem I faced with all the males is they could not get within 10 feet of her or she would go ballistic, charging them with intent to kill. she tore up 2 males by removing parts of their tails and taking off flesh from their limbs.

About 4 years ago I got a new female to pair with a young male i had. they were similar ages, similar sizes. she was a terrible captive- shy, reluctant to feed in view of me, and hid much of her life. not a good candidate because I could not tell when she cycled, or anything.

had cody been paired up or raised up with another sulfur early in her life, i know i would not have these problems. she went 7 years knowing no other being but me, and my family who took care of her.

when i do this again, it will be with raising a pair of hatchlings and to offer as much space as possible. right now i am enjoying raising up a trio of red ackies.

I do not know anyone else pairing up sulfurs, they are beautiful but require sooo much- space, energy, food, space, they are not easy.

here's two males duking it out over everything- basking, food, the entire enclosure. the one on the right is 6.5 feet long, 40lbs, the other is 6 feet, 35 lbs.

Best regards,

John
