Discuss, discuss- the topic ; Young Collareds on sand?

KofSeattle Aug 12, 2003 06:14 PM

Hello,

Just got one of John's beauty male aquaflames (thanks john) he is pretty small still. I was wondering what the general thought was on keeping young Collareds on sand. Is impaction a danger for these smaller fellows as it is with most lizards? In the past I used paper towels for young lizards but wasn't sure it was an issue since everything I have read on Collareds states to use fine playsand or the likes, which I am. I wasn't sure paper towels would hold the temps required as sand does but I don't want him getting impacted either. I could switch to a slate bottom if necessary, what do you think. Discuss....

Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't know much about impaction, but I know two things: For one, they live on it in the wild, and second, they don't like sand in ther mouths, so they don't eat much of it. I have watched mine eat, and she is very careful about avoiding the sand.

for everyone else...I use pool filter sand. It costs about $9.00, as opposed to $2.50 for playsand, but I only buy it once or twice a year, and I like the texture of it. I feel it holds water perfectly for nesting sites, where I feel normal play sand packs very tightly. I realize playsand has been around for a long time, but...move over playsand, there's a new sand in town! LOL.

Especially when ya have over 22 different lizards. I thought I would give them each their own wall to wall capeting, in the color they chose ! LOL Eve

I've never had a problem with hatchling collareds on sand.
