Egg laying........

kellybee Mar 22, 2007 05:52 AM

Hi all, just a quick question, my Bicinctores Elvis is 12 inches, weighs in at 33g, and has been showing her blush colour since 1st March.

The last few days she has taken to burrowing in her lay box, not frantic digging, its a tunnel she's already made, that she seems to be spending time sleeping in (no scratching noises etc), I have noted that she has eaten NOTHING since last weekend and seems unfazed by my taking the lid off, where normally she will throw herself at me and make a dash for the door.

Anyway, it seems as though she is behaving like an expectant mother would, yet she is not particularly fat. In Yoshi I have noted her egg bumps. In Elvis, there are none. Her shape appears as though she has puffed herself up to warn me off.

I'm just wondering, is this OK? Would she stop eating if she still had room for a full tummy, because she doesnt look any fatter than she did a fortnight ago, although I guess maybe she has a very small number of eggs if any, the gravid colour is still there, though it has faded.

Kelly when we last spoke you said she was still active, and eating like a horse, so something has changed Although if she disappears for a long period of time, CHECK her, I know some have left them alone in a cave ot tunnel and not seen them in a couple days only to find they had been eggbound and sadly did not make it.

I'm not trying to alarm you, just be extremely observant and keep an eye on her, like I had told you if she were to appear weak in any way or sickly looking then you may have problems.

Sure hoping shes just preparing and will be fine. Let us know how she does.

Being as dumb as ever I have my days mixed up and its Monday the last time I saw her eat, she has been in hiding since she went to bed on Monday night, and I lifted the lid Tuesday am to check she was well, and again this morning, the thing is that as you said she normally bounces off the walls, I think its likely she is preparing herself, she doesnt use the lay box at all normally.

With Yoshi reabsorbing or not reabsorbing or whatever it is she is doing, and with Elvis behaving like this yet not looking particularly fat or lumpy I thought I'd better be safe than sorry, she changed so quick it was very surprising...... I will keep you updated, maybe check her when I get home this evening, and again in the morning

Thanks again
Kelly

I just sussed out that the lay box has a transparent bottom, its made from a big sandwich box.

Anyway, I normally lift it out of the tank every morning to make sure no crickets have tunneled under the sides, and I can check her without even taking the lid off, this evening her belly was flat on the bottom of the box, and is still round, she was scratching in there I could see, so I can I guess check her twice a day, once through the bottom, and once through the top to get a better look. If she stays in there too long I'll let you know

Thanks again
Kelly
