Laying eggs with no male...

ReptarLeo Mar 22, 2007 11:12 AM

Last night my female leopard gecko who has always lived alone went to the bathroom and appeared to lay what looks like an egg at the same time. I've never bred geckos so I'm not positive it is an egg but it certainly looks like one from internet photos. She appears to have laid it WITH her poop/pee as they seem attached. Is this possible, and is it serious? Thanks!

EEeerr.......... how big is it? Can you get a pic? And when you say she's "always lived alone" you mean you've had her since she was a baby?

Ummm yes, I got her when she was about 6 weeks old back in August, so she is at least 7 months old and has not seen another gecko since then haha. I read that females can lay eggs even without a male (like chickens I guess), but I was concerned cuz it appears to be an egg attached to her defacation. And I don't have a digital camera so I can't get pictures :/ sorry. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

My first guess would be that it is simply a larger than normal white urate.

First, yes females can lay eggs without ever being bred by or even being near a male. These eggs will however be infertile. Eggs are typically around 3/4 to 1 inch long. If it is significantly smaller, then I doubt that it is an egg.
