I was trying to adopt an Eastern, and through "the grapevine" I got this one. They told me someone had it for a long time and didn't want it anymore. I had it checked by my vet and he said she was about 10 years old, and in good health. It is pretty small...about 4 inches. Do you think this is right? Can you tell how old she is by the picture. She is very shy, and won't eat when I am in the room. She has been fed only fruit and veg. with an occasional worm. No vitamins. Thank you for any info.

I don't think there is any accurate way to age a box turtle, but I have some 4 and 5 year olds that are around 4 inches.

I would think that by 10, they might be approaching full size, if not already there.

Whatever her age, she looks like a really pretty girl. I hope to adopt some Easterns when I have the room. Good luck with her!

I have learned that there really is no way at all to know the age of a turtle unless you know when they hatched.
I know for certain that my painted is 13 this year b/c he's CB from a 1994 reptile show & I got him when he was a hatchling.
My yellow mud isn't CB long story on him.. but he was a hatchling in 1996 so I know his age.
Kibbles the box hatchling who was dug up by someone I know in.. Nov? I think it was, was 2006's baby.. the rest of my shelled ones.. I have no idea how old any of them are.
The sulcata has grown like a weed since 2002 but we can only guess at her age. She's gone from 9.1 lbs to about 70lbs right now. So she wasn't an adult but was she 3-5-8 years old in 2002? No way to find out.
