Hey folks, I just wanted to share some recent stuff. I snapped this pic last night. The little storri is burrowed under the thermometer this evening. No change with the other two. The smaller eggs in the foreground were laid Saturday.

Good job Neal,

I really like your melinus and of course your storrs Too bad you dont see too many big melinus.

You better stop taking care of your monitors so good. They are not supposed to lay that many eggs. Why do you listin to that FR guy, has his husbandry all wrong. Just look at how many babies he has. hahahahahahahaha

Hey since i need a male, maybe you can lend me your melinus to breed to my female storri hahahaha. Yellow spiny tailed.... thing monitors. hahaha

Cheers,
Sean

If taking decent care of my monitors is dumb and wrong then I guess I'm a big dummy and I'm taking the wrong approach. So FR must be a REALLY big dummy. Haha

That other fella in AZ (not FR) who also produced storri last year, told me his were taking a break from breeding for the winter. I'm not sure how to tell mine to take a break.

Cheers

The folks from Europe, cool them down. They hibernate in Europe, only not in Az. or Oz. Mind you, the part of Oz that storrs comes from is kinda like southern Mex. You know, where they don't have winters, or a need to hibernate.

But, maybe we are the fools, we have to work all the time. Stupid me, I thought this was for fun, something you should not have to take a break from.

Hey go to my site and look at my post to you. Thanks

from your experience, what are the melinus like when they get big? As flighty etc as the youngsters? thanks

Neal_ Mar 23, 2007 12:36 PM

Hi Mike, in my (limited) experience, the adults are not flighty so much as aloof. To approach without food almost guarantees a defensive response. If I make it clear that I have food or they approach of their own accord out of curiosity, some interaction is possible. Otherwise they seem upset by any intrusions into their cage.

They spend time hanging out in various types of hides, but they seem to consider a deep burrow the best retreat. They have never shown even the slightest sign of wanting to escape or any interest in coming out of their cage. They seem kind of boring, as monitors go.

Cheers

Hi Roger,

I have been busy and not online much lately. How are your critters doing?

Cheers

They are doing well. I've had to straighten out some husbandry issues. The big nile room was hell to keep humid this winter, so I finally broke down and bought a whole bunch of cypress and made big piles instead of wetting the room with only a few inches on the floor twice a day. If I skipped a day the room would be bone dry and the big guy would be curled up in a bucket of water. Also, The smaller one escaped from the cage into the room for 2 weeks before I realized it. I thought I was doing something terribly wrong and she (I think) had stopped eating. Finally, I dug up the whole cage, found nothing. Out with the larger Nile for 2 weeks and not a scratch. He could easily have gotten her if he wanted. So maybe it's a blessing in disguise since I've been wanting to try introducing them.

Roger
