how do I disinfecting a tank... thats has been sitting outside with rain water

louiec Aug 12, 2003 07:14 PM

hey everyone...

I was just given a 15 gallon tank.. that I plan on using for a new beardie...

ok here is the deal... my brother told me I could have it... but whe I went to go get it... I found out it was outside for about a week (maybe a week and a half)... he said he totally forgot about it... and it still had the branch the substrate (repti bark or something like that) and actually some dead crickets... on top of that it was filled almost to the top with rain water... needless to say it smelled like swamp water...

well I took everything out... hosed it down... washed (with soap a few times) and right now its sitting in my bath tub...

right now... i cant seem to get that swampy smell out of the plastic border ( I am sure after sometime... and a few more cleanings it will come out)...

but now its time to disenfect it... so what the best way to do this?
anyone?

thanks
-Lou

ps- he housed frills in it b4...

you can use bleach, or sudsy ammonia,i use either of these to clean tanks, usually bleach unless there was a dragon with coccidia in it then i use sudsy ammonia. Just pour bleach in there, mix with hot water, i think 1 part bleach to 3 parts water should do just fine, scrub it really well, even let it sit overnight, and then rinse very well. after rinsing it very well i ususally scrub it once more with an antibacterial dish soap and then rinse well again, be sure that bleach and soap smell is gone and there is no residue left, that should do the trick and leave you with a nice clean tank.

any particular bleach or sudsy ammonia?? (where can I purchase sudsy ammonia??)

so I pretty much put 1 part bleach (or sudsy ammonia) and 3 part hot water... and fill it to the top? scrub fully and let it sit over night?? then the next day rinse out... maybe even use a dish washing soap... fully rinse and I should be good to go..

seems pretty easy...

thanks Reiko...
