Hey gang, I just put my egyptian uro into a 55 gal tank and I think he likes it, he wandered around for the last few hours before the lights went out tonight, messing things up to suit himself. I just wanted to ask a few questions. I am still using newspaper and paper towels because I am not really sure of what substrate I want to use, is that ok for a uro of 7.5 - 8 inches? He seems pretty happy digging around in the paper and has three hides in the larger tank, should that make him feel more secure? I figure I could use the larger tank until I make his adult sized enclosure, since theres no way I am going to buy an aquarium that large.

You can use paper towels for his whole life if you feel like it. But at this size, you can switch him to a particulate substrate pretty safely. If you use sand, just make sure you're really diligent about checking his temperatures.

Yeah, paper towel is fine as long as you keep things clean. I've always used millet seed with great success.
