i love aspen wood shavings, cheap and you can buy it in huge bags that seem to last forever
fake grass (carpet).
By far, the cheapest and IMHO the best substrate is newsprint. I use unprinted newsprint but either will do.
Also why has nobody mentioned paper towels? I find them fairly cheap at safeway. I think they work well especially for BRBs where humidity is important. But I don't like how easily snakes scrunch them up and suddenly they aren't substrate. I've been thinking about looking into something else. If I could find good thick absorbant paper easily I'd give it a chance.
UHaul has it for about $9 for 140 sheets.
I have been used paper towels and they tend to hold contaminates well, but you have to change them out every couple of days, depending on feeding, how often the bp climbs in and out of water, etc.
just my 2 cents.

Ross, I get it at a shop up here in Toronto that carries supplies for moving (i.e. cardboard boxes, etc.) The unprinted newsprint is used to wrap up glass and plates for a move. I get 800 sheets (24"x36"
for $19.
