I think I freaked our snake out

paulnola Mar 23, 2007 04:29 PM

I posted a couple of weeks ago that I revamped the vivarium to make it a much more natural environment for our little annulata, and he seems to be liking it.
We have also acquired a cat in the last 2 weeks too. So we moved the viv into another room to prevent the cat from getting curious and jumping on top of the big glass box.
Since about the time both of these events took place, our snake's demeanor has changed drastically. He used to be very cool & calm, he would come out to check out what was going on if my wife & I were doing something in the room with him, and he would stay by the doors and try to climb out once we opened them or would climb into my hand if I put it in with him to pick him up and take him out. It was as if he expected to be taken out whevever we went up and unlocked the doors.
Now, he immediately (and quickly) runs for cover every time one of us goes near the vivarium. To get him out to feed him is a race; I have to grab him before he burrows and hides. But when I do grab him, he is agitated and scared. He has never shown this type of behavior since the first day I brought him home.
I am wondering if the changing and moving of his physical environment is to blame, or does he now smell the cat and afraid it will eat him (we don't let the cat in the room with him anymore but I'm sure its scent is on us). I'm not sure what happened, but I miss our little guy's easy, laid back demeanor. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Paul

It is possible that your temps have changed. Some rooms are warmer than others, some areas of a room might be warmer than others. Remember that heat rises. A warmer than normal vivarium will definitely stress out a snake. And make sure to use a good thermometer, those stick on strips are pretty inconsistent.

I have been monitoring the temp inside the vivarium, it has been between 78-80f consistantly since we made the change. Humidity ranges between 40 and 60%, depending on whether the plants were misted or not.

Since my last post we have moved the vivarium into our bedroom, where he will hopefully again be aware of our comings and goings, and come out to see what is going on like he used to when he was in the dining room.
