Crested Climbing Issue

brent_sydney Mar 23, 2007 06:27 PM

Back again!

I know geckos are supposed to have a little stick to them, and mine doesn't have any at all. He can't climb his walls, and when he jumps off my hand into his leaves he falls down (back on to my hand). When he crawls around on my arm he slips off sometimes and I need to catch him. I was told that I might be spraying him too much, but now I spray him twice a day, morning and night. I give him about 6 sprays when I wake up and about 10 sprays when I go to sleep.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Only two reasons I can think of which will cause geckos to 'unstick'. They are shedding (or have shed stuck on their toes) or nutritional imbalance (ie not enough calcium in the diet). The shedding issue you can't really do anything about, but after a couple days, he should have his sticking power again. If not, check the toes for any stuck shed. If you see some, soaking and carefully pulling it off (or using mineral oil/baby oil to loosen the skin. Wipe off excess oils when done too) with tweezers gently (this may wind up with a dropped tail, depending on how tolerate your crested is to being rather firmly held. I suggest doing a few toes at a time, then putting him away to rest for a few hours then repeat)

Not enough calcium means increasing amount of calcium in his diet. Either dusting insects, stirring a little calcium into his food (a pinch will do) or using well balanced complete diets such as T-Rex's Crested gecko diet.

That's probably it then... but I do feed him the MRP every single day because he doesn't eat very much, and I also put a calcium conditioner in his water. I'll mix the calcium with the mrp aswell to give him an extra boost!!

Hopefully that helps me stick again.
