Pros & Cons?

CharStuff Mar 23, 2007 07:02 PM

We have 2 female Crested Gekos that we have raised from babies that we purchased from a reputable reptile room. They are almost to breeding age. Before we jump in and breed I would like to hear the pros and cons?

Thanx!

stress to you and your geckos, and a bunch more mouths to feed, and a lot of money out of your pocket. i have never breed cresteds because i have not yet masted keeping them however i started out adopting a bunch of sick cresties so im sure it helps starting with unsick animals. they are however improving but VERY slowly. this is my second year with breeding leos and my first breeding fatties and i am very very stessed but excited. haha, just worrying about catching a new clutch b4 they get to cold and how everyone is eating. worrying about the incubators being the right temp and if the temp in the house changes so do the incubators. just stuff like that but it is great when they finally hatch. im not sure how old you are or if you still live at home, work full time, go to school, or what not but i would not do it if you live at home w/parents! i would not do it if you are going to school and work full time either. but to each his own and it is always rewarding when they come out and are in good health. but then you have to find homes for all of them and you cant keep them all in the same cage once they grow up becuase you dont want inbreeding, as far as that goes they should be housed seperatly as babies too. anyhow that mostly sounds like CONS but that is abviuosly not true because people wouldnt do it. it is just all the stuff that i am currently worried about at this time.

Pro- Enjoyment of seeing nature at its best. Nothing beats looking in the deli cup and seeing two eyes looking back
Yes, there may be some monitary value to raising geckos but you should know your market and how much effort you will need to put into it before begining a breeding project.

Cons- space! if you are going to breed one gecko, expect about 10-18 babies a year. Do you have the space to keep these animals? Do you have the initial money to feed more mouths? Do you have the time? Do you have an outlet for the babies?
Another consideration many fail to take into account is the cost of vet services when animals get sick. If you cannot affort a vet, seriously reconsider the project.

Great question. I hope this is helpful to you in making your decision.
