I recently bought a snake (albino burmese). Three days after receiving it I found snake mites crawling all over it. The next day, which is today, I called the pet store to notify them of their mite problem. They informed me that they knew about it and are now bleaching their entire store and treating their entire stock. When I got the snake, there was no apparent sign of anything wrong, so I think it had some eggs in it fro some new unchecked imports. None of my other snakes or lizards have any signs of them but I'll be watching. Does anyone have any experience with mites? I sprayed the snake with Repti Relief today and bleached its cage and water bowl. I am going to give it some Ivermectin tommorrow. When I sprayed the mite medicine on today, the mites did not fall off immediately. How long will it take for the mites to fall off? Any information will help. This is my first encounter with mites.

Another quick question from reptileguy99. Can mites cause resperatory problems because my snake was breathing funny today. I think it may be the stress or pain, but I want to make sure.

you are going to administer the Ivermectin? It is fairly toxic and the difference between an effective dose and an overdose is quite small when injected.

Mixed in a spray is how I prefer, but my first hand experience is rather limited since I havn't had a mite infestation in ~15yrs. Understanding reptile parasites by Klingenberg has the dilution (it's not on the top of my head).

i have been treating the snake with reptile safe mite killer and havn't resorted to ivermectin yet. i think the mites are dead but they are still under the scales. should i go ahead and try to pull them out or just leave them be?

The next shed should take care of them. Moreoften than not the products like reptile-relief and mite-off are successfull.
