A Sunday afternoon in Texas

guero Mar 23, 2007 08:40 PM

Did a little field herping here in North Central Texas last Sunday. A farmer asked if a couple of us would come out and relocate some rattlesnakes. He was going to kill them if spotted. Here is a few pics.

One of three really cool coachwhips.

Another coachwhip

One of 14 rattlesnakes that were found.

Copperhead in hiding. This was one of four that were found.

Everything was found in a three hour span.
Enjoy

Couple things--what part pf Texas was this in? ALso in California the counter part to this Coachwhip is the red racer which does look very similar but they have in incredibly indecent attitude and there is no way you could hold one of those with out being bitten repeditly. Was this animal somewhat dormant or out and about when you captured it, like the other poster I am suprised. ALso I like the rocky terrian there - just curious as to where your at? My asking is with respect to lizards my favorite faire.....Cheers!!! I have yet to see a copperhead. The color under the leaves is so orange in the picture that I would have guessed some other specie--but then I have never scene one up close.

This is an area in between towns around Decatur, Bowie, Montague, and Nocona. And yes, this guy took a good shot at me but mostly just crapped all over everything. Temps were at about mid 70's and he was out cruising over a rock. All the coachwhips that day calmed pretty fast. I normally don't have a problem handling them. Here the Texas rat snakes are the worst. The copperheads were all spotted buried under leaves. Each was caught without disturbing the others, which were within about 2 feet of each other. Here is what they looked like.

All venomous was released in another location and all non-venomous was turned loose.

Here is a juvenile (24-28 inches) that I got to sit still for about 5 seconds on a rock before it shot off.

Man those are some sweet copper heads. I wish we had them here in Ca. In my opinion, I belive those to be one of the prittiest venomous species here in the US. Congrats on the finds, and keep posting more of your future finds.

Usually it's only a couple if your lucky in three hours. This was a rare case.

This is what is looked like nearby. I didn't a get a pic of the area we were in as I was kinda busy.

VERY nice, Scott!

Let me know when you guys head out again- would love to tag along!

I'm desperately trying to find decent spots here in central TX.

Was down in Corpus with Todd a couple weeks ago- lots of neat stuff!

Love those copperheads- beautiful!
