rat pups all died??

ballfreak Mar 24, 2007 09:20 AM

i had a litter of about 15 pups and within a week they all died? im pretty sure this was the mothers second time breeding? not 100%! she was even trying to nurse them while they were dead? has this ever happened to anyone here? any clues? they looked good the first days then they just turned to mush? they actually looked premature? should i get rid of the mother? thanks for any help.

Ive never had a complete litte that way but has some none the less, i would think there is something wrong with mom and get rid of her myself, that is if i can afford to and have others to take her place, but the mushy ones do happen.

Refer to the "Rules".....

Don't produce - fed off
Kill babies - fed off
Sick - fed off
Jumpy - fed off
Bite me - whacked on cement then fed off

Looks kind of like rule # 1 to me, not producing viable pups.

Of course rules are made to be bent and even broken, if you have no other breeder female and need the production, hang onto her a little while until you can raise up a replacement. Also, once you've identified un undesirable trait in a breeder, NEVER hold back any of their babies as breeders. Not to say it would be for certain heritable, but why even waste your time?

I have dozens of breeder females and at the first sign of any trouble, they go the retirement village - AKA snakes stomache!
