cb spilotes?

karijo Mar 24, 2007 04:51 PM

hey y'all.
i had a beauty of a wild caught female spilotes about 10 years ago.
she was a hefty girl, about 9 feet long, and a beautiful very distinct clean pattern not unlike a mangrove tree snake. (in fact, that's what i almost mistook her for the first time i saw her because she was so thin and curled up, all i saw was these very bright and clean lined yellow rings against a solid black, she was gorgeous even though she looked awful!).
anyway, she was the devil (and a rescue - i paid a mere $25 for her!), but i loved that snake! after i treated her for internal nasties, she filled out to a flawless shiny insanely clean patterned gal, and became my favorite (though mean as all heck)! ended up selling her to a guy who had a male back in NY, only because he had such high hopes of breeding them.

so, i've always wanted to get another - anybody know of ANYBODY with cb spolites out there in the US?
Thanks!!
KJO

There is a handful of breeders in the US. Unfortunately most breeders are backordered. There is a breeder in Kentucky that has the occasional youngster for sale. Most of the breeders I know are working to produce solid yellow and these youngsters are outside the normal budget.

When I had my girl a decade ago people just thought I was nuts for having anything to do with a spilotes! Nice to see they're increasing in popularity - though I'm not sure why. LOL

Anyway, I am interested in finding one with that nice black and yellow banding - of course I suppose I could just get a mangrove tree snake... but alas, my heart belongs to spilotes!

Unfortunately, true US cbb babies are extremely rare. I only know of two clutches that were offered last year - one from Primareptilia and one from Turtles and Tortoises (I suspect theirs was from a wc gravid female). There may have been others from wc gravid females, but they certainly were not advertised. As Bill (Sighthunter) said there are only a handful of people currently working with Spilotes, and a few more of us trying to get into them as well. I was able to obtain 2.0 farm bred babies from Surinam and 0.1 baby from unknown origin (although I suspect it was from the T&T clutch). I also just picked up a subadult pair (5-6' range) of imports that seem to be clean and in good health. Fingers crossed for these guys to do well for me over the summer and maybe produce some eggs next season. Keep an eye out in this forum as well as the Indigo and Rat forums for news from the few dedicated Spilotes keepers out there.

Thanks, Billy!
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you as well!
I know it's a long shot hoping for some cbb, I'd settle for just captive born.
But I'm in no rush, I'll hold out for that perfect looking little baby with a rotten attitude.

They had a pretty baby at East Bay Vivarium I obsessed over for a few months, should have bought her but kept putting it off. Never imagined anybody would buy her, of course someone DID last week!
Argh.

Those are some real beaut's you have there!!

Good luck with your quest! The nice thing I've found with the young'uns is that their attitudes are really pretty good! They seem to be very confident and inquisitive little suckers but won't hesitate to take a whack at you if they don't like what you're doing.

Its nice to see so many people interested in tiger rats. I have 4 different pairs that I am working with but success happens only once in a while. with luck I will have something this year. here is my old web page which has some information on it.

jaquar.ir.miami.edu/~tdavis/tiger.html

When I do get success it looks like this.

Well, I've found comfort in the arms of another... ok. Not arms exactly.
But I decided to bring home a yearling cbb western hognose today.
I know. Goofy little snakes, but I've had just about everything over the years (used to do rescue in NY), and the snakes I loved the most (and always wished I'd held onto and not adopted out)?
western hognose, spilotes, viper boas (i know i know...), and blood pythons.

yep.
i think that's my dork-out list.

well.. and one day maybe a nice pair of yellow B. schlegeli to round it all out.
heh.

so at least now i have this cute little guy to keep me busy until i find another baby s. pullatus. (s. pullatus pullatus thank you very much!)
