Female Okeetee (ZigZag) Cornsnake

KJUN Mar 24, 2007 07:50 PM

I promised to post more pictures of some Okeetee cornsnakes from the same bloodline as the one featured above. Once they shed, I got so busy breeding them that I forgot all about it. Anyway, it was about to rain, so it was pretty dark outside, but I took some anyway. The lighting makes the snake look darker than it really is. You can get the basic idea, though.

I really like these guys for their pattern more than just their coloration. I have a thing for zigzags/Aztecs/ZagTecs/Whatever. Notice that the blotches - even when they are combined and zigzagged - are still outlined in black. Cool, huh?

I like them.

Those are NICE, and should produce some awesome babies. Good luck with them.

the origional Aztec corn line/stock was Miami looking dark grey background with really heavy black outlined markings.......they were sweet......(the second or third generation lost the grey and the borders)

your Okees are sweet too...........

The aztec look originated in a couple of different areas, but I don't really like calling these Aztecs. Caqll them whatever - they are Jasper County animals, so no Miami locality blood in them.

If those are from Mike H. stock, he got his first ones from me. A close friend of mine caught the founding stock in the hunt club. I've worked with this bloodline for 25 years. Take care! John Meltzer

That's whatI was told by Mike. So, that's ~4 generations, right? They are great looking animals, but all the ones I've had have been pretty weak. I chalked it up to the babies getting too hot during shipping, and these adults are of an unknown age, but the females don't strike me as being young. The male seems the youngest of the group, but is a VERY laid-back, non-agressive breeder. I chalked it up to age. Now I wonder if they just need to be outcrossed badly.

I did outcross the male to an unrelated F1 Jasper County cornsnake. I p[lanned to keep some line-breed babies and some outcrossed ones to compare their growth, etc. I'm curious to see if they are comparable since they'll be born here and never shipped. These adults have changed hands at least thrice to get from Mike to me. That would stress out ANY snake regardless of what it is.....lol.

Anywya, thanks for the added information. You did a good job selecting these guys for coloration and pattern. Any chance you have an image of the original WC's that could be laid side-by-side to these guys after 2 decades of selective breeding? That would be an interesting post!

Hi KJ,
I don't have pics of the 3 original gravid females my friend caught. I picked a pair of babies from each female and used those babies as my founding stock. I selectively bred for certain looks and none of them look like the original wild caughts. One line I bred the black out of them and another line produced hypos and then the classic okeetees like you have. Take care! John
