Uromastyx Fighting

bryndavell Mar 25, 2007 12:30 PM

We have had 2 uromastyx for 7 years and one is bigger than the other do not know the sex either. Have noticed over the last couple of years a head bobbing and chasing and grabbing the side of the head and back legs by both like a mating ritual. Then recently the smaller one building a nest and laying many eggs that were soft. After this she has got very aggresive and seems to e now attacking the othe and causing kin damage to him? We have had to split the vivarium in two and seperate them any advice or idea why this has suddenly happened after being together since they were young?

Uros can suddenly stop getting along at any time. In your case, the female is defending her eggs. She may or may not get over it in time. You should start preparing a separate enclosure as she'll have to be separate at least for a while, and possibly forever.

Really they have been together for so long though?

Supposedly it can happen at any time, but eggs are a big thing. She has eggs to protect. She doesn't see her buddy the cagemate she's had for years - all she sees is a threat to her eggs.

He could be irritating her because she had eggs and now she wants to protect them whether they are in the tank or not she will defend them. He is also probably stressing her out by being in there and she is getting defensive.
