Flavia Guimaraes Aug 12, 2003 08:56 PM

Pothos Plant is found everywhere here in Kuala Lumpur. My MTS is a very pick eater and although i offer him collards, mustard greens, kang kong, carrots, pumpkin, green beans and even a boiled egg evey day he doesnt seem interested in eating! So i thought perhaps he would be interested in eating some Pothos plant. What do you think?

Flavia,

You can't do any better! A Pothos relative of your Pothos is the primary food source for Corucia on New Guinea and the Solomons. By all means, do so. If it's from outside, make sure it is thoughly washed and sterilized.

Sincerely,
Brian

Also when you feed Corucia Pothos, One can time their digestion. The reason is their urine will be brown instead of clear. Their is no cause for alarm, Corucia zebrata, through evolution, has developed the means to counter the toxins produced in defense by this plant. It is dangerous for other animals to eat. For instance, if you ate some, it would make you extremely ill.

Don't try this at home except with your Corucia!

How can i sterilize a living plant? I intended to put some vases inside his cage!

You can't really sterilize a plant and still have it very edible- what I do when I buy this house plant (I feed it as a treat, or when I am lazy and don't have time to make PTS food) is wash the leaves with a biodegradable soap as best I can to remove pesticides and stick it in the shower and let the water spray the plant for 20-30 min. I put the whole potted plant in and let them ravage it for a day or so, then take it out and let it recover for about a month...
The pothos will turn your PTS urine very dark brown or even RED. It is not blood, but probably a plant pigment breakdown product. The oxalate crystals in the plant leaves are highly irritating to the oral tissues of mammals, but the PTS seems not to be bothered. Most mammals will froth, drool and gag if they chew this plant, so if you buy it, keep it away from any plant chewing kitties.
