North Carolina permits...?

mikem Aug 12, 2003 09:02 PM

I'm planning on making a purchase of my first hot snake in approx 6-9 months. i am going to get a pygmy rattlesnake. i've read and heard by word of mouth that these are excellent to start out with. so, first things first...do i need a permit in the state of north carolina to own venomous snakes? i've read on a certain reptile site, that it's only required for specific endangered species. Does anyone know for sure? i'm asking here on this forum because there seems to be quiet a few knowledgeable herps here and hopefully maybe a few from NC. if a permit is required, is it difficult to obtain? thanks in advance. now, i'll do some research on my own...any help appreciated.

My interpretation of NC's laws based on the info from a book I have called "A Field Guide to Reptiles and the Law" is:

You need a special permit to collect or possess:
- Carolina Pygmy Rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius miliarius)
- Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
- Eastern Coralsnake
This permit is mostly reserved for educational or scientific institutions.
You should be allowed to keep a pigmy as long as it isn't miliarius but check with NC Wildlife Resources to make sure. The info in this book is a few years old and the laws may have changed.
