Questions on new CG.

mmh Mar 26, 2007 01:36 AM

Hi. I'm new to the forum and I've only owned a CG for 1 month now. According to the pet store she was 3 months old when I bought her. I keep her on paper and one side of her cage is heated by an undertank heater. She has hides and plastic plants and a water dish she loves to just sit in (unusual huh?). I mist her twice a day and that is when she seems to drink. I'm curious about a few things. She is Hungry All the time! Mostly she wants crickets and mealworms and will practically jump on my hand to eat the mealworms. I know that young CG's eat more insects then adults but is this constant hunger normal? I also give her babyfood mixed with water and CGD every other day and she eats small amounts of that too. She prefers peach, pear, and apple/blueberry so far and hates banana LOL. Also, what is an average amount of time to wait for them to shed. To be honest I'm surprised she/he hasn't shed yet. Thank you for reading this.

That level of aggressive hunger is normal in juveniles - they're growing, so they need the food. As far as shedding goes, I've had mine more than a year and have yet to catch her in the act (seen my leopard gecko do it many times, but never the crested). You may never actually see the shedding, depending on how much cover you have provided in the tank. Mine has lots of places to hide, with a ton of leaves in her terrarium, so I imagine instinct tells her she's vulnerable while shedding, so she hides during the process. If you have less stuff in your tank, you might see it happen, but don't be too concerned if you don't - as long as you're maintaining proper humidity levels in the tank, the gecko shouldn't have any problems shedding.
