hand feeding-getting bit.

cee4 Mar 26, 2007 09:06 AM

One of my baby geckos will take mealies out of my fingers. Now should I continue doing this on occasion? I really like it but kinda worry about my fingers.
The reason I ask is i made the mistake of handfeeding a beardie once and I can say that Beardies bite hard and can draw blood..

It's ok just becareful you may get bit. Mine take from my fingers no problem. They tend to take it nicely as if they know it's my fingers and not the tweezers.

I saw just use twezzers like I do its seems to work best, in my case i can monitor how many cricket/worms they are auctually consuming.

Hand feeding is never really recomended... Adult leos can give a nasty bite... You do not want your leo to associate your fingers with food... Who wants a gecko nipping at their fingers every time you have to get into the cage??

I use mostly a tweezers but i use my hands sometimes and i have no problems with any of my leos. They don't ever, and have never tried to bite me, they know the difference between my hand and the feeding tongs!

Im not worried about them trying to bite me on purpose. Its those accidental bites that hurt. But anyway he accidentally got me yesterday(he has bad eyesight)and it was nothing so Im not worried now.I just wasnt sure how strong thier jaws were.I got tokays but use gloves(they are still young too). And I had a beardie once that bit me trying to take a worm out of my hand and it hurt.I also got tagged by my tegu once(that also hurt).Of course I wasnt trying to hand feed the tegu it was just a stupid mistake. If it happened now Id be in trouble.
Im really impressed with the geckos taking food like that though. It just way too cute..He stands up all tall on his legs and swishes his tail all around before he takes the worm.

Yea a leos bite when small is not to bad. When they are full grown it can be a bit more intense but it's still not all that terrifying! LOL..Anyways, good luck to you!
