Cool pen, thats looks like what I want to build this summer, but just looking at the photo how do the climb out of the pond it looks like there is rock all around it? or can't they get in it? Also those are some gorgeous looking easterns, the male is really bright, if you have any of their offspring you want to get rid of I would be interested. I'm like you, no cheezy garden art allowed in my yard, I like a more natural look, my wife always wants to add gnomes or whatever, and thats where I have to put my foot down. I did allow a gargole though, because it is super cool and it spits water into the small pond in our front yard. Have you thought about adding a thornless rose bush? or prickly pear cactus? Not sure where you live but the prickly pear will grow even in Iowa, I have a mass growing in the front yard for 4 yrs now.
Cheers
Jeff

didn't mean any offense to you, I guess I read your post wrong, everybody has differing tastes. I do like my gargole, a lot. I hope you don't want to put in any plastic pink flamimgos though? Actually some of the toad houses are cool too, I've been thinking about getting one of those. Can't wait to see picts of your new pen when its done, or even as you work on it would be cool too.
Take care
Jeff

Great pics & I like the flat rock decor.. slate rock isn't it?
I need some decorative rock.. I need a professional landscaper to tell the truth. :-x

We like our cheesy decor, hee hee! We have statues on our gate posts- a tortoise, a dachshund, in front- a rattlesnake & a roadrunner in back. We like having likenesses of our local predator & prey sitting in the back.
Then we have a large dachshund statue for a gate stop.
I was out yesterday afternoon, checked several stores for a toad house but couldn't find one.
I want to use it as a house for Kibbles the baby turtle.
I looked online at catalogs couldn't find one but did find some on eBay.. haven't ordered one yet though. I was hoping before I try to order, I'll run across one locally.

I have a carved wooden bear I bought in NM last year.. he was supposed to be on the porch but puppy likes to chew so he's going in the turtle pen among the flowers when/if I get them growing.
Marigolds & petunias are edible for the tortoise. I'm trying to find plants that are edible for her & am going to grow only those things inside the box turtle pen.
