North Carolina Field Notes

westernNC Mar 26, 2007 12:34 PM

I know that this is not the where the "in" crowd posts their field notes, but it is the easiest site for me to access and paste information. I spent a few days at the coast and the rest in the piedmont. Here you go...findings from the past week in NC. Most snakes were found under A/C early in the day before it got too hot. Temps around here have been cool in the mornings with a high each day of around 84 and lots of sunshine.

Hey Todd,
I will see what I can do about photos...I have a good friend who says I'm selfish because I don't post photos. Found a nice eastern king around the Lincoln/Catawba county line last night on the way home from work. This has started off to be the best year yet. Heading back to the coast this week and the weather looks ideal...cool rain on Thursday then mild temps and partly cloudy for the weekend...

yeah it is good here too, flipped an adult female splendida on Sunday and yesterday my co-worker didn't stop for one streaking across the highway on the way home. A little light rain in the evenings will get it rippin'!

Nice snake! Locality info?
Nothing happening on the coast of NC this week...a racer, worm snake, tantilla, and a nice looking yellow rat in New Hanover Co. Too dry down here, plus too much sunshine. The AC gets hot early and the window is gone. Hoping for some light rain and partly cloudy days in April. I will hit the foothills next weekend.

west side of Nueces county Texas. Found out on the prowl in November last year, adult male, got a female that is already gravid. May try to double clutch her if she'll have him. No sockheads down here, mostly milk chocolate brown with yellow.

I'm meeting up with a friend in the sandhills next weekend. I will bring the coastal eastern and the foothills eastern and get him to take some good photos and I will post for comparison. There is a good deal of variance in L. getula from the mountains of NC to the coast.
