how far can they smell?

wonkapete Mar 26, 2007 03:51 PM

I watched a rat snake in my garage this weekend. Days earlier, I'd seen a rat in there. I only assume he got him. Does anyone know how far away a snake can smell a rat? I can't find the answer online. Thanks!

Well, this question is a very good one, but there are way too many variable scenarios that would affect the answer. Such as humidity, temperature, any wind direction at all, etc.....but I know from personal experience, in a "calm" atmosphere they can detect scent molecules from many feet away. I notice a difference in them when I walk into my "snake room" to feed all my snakes.
Also when following a rodent's scent, there are actual solid scent particles that stay on the ground from foot contact. It would be very easy for a snake to follow a "scent trail" layed down the perimeter of the concrete floor in a garage.
