Mine died when a cal king got loose and opened her cage and entered it ...

I had hoped she had just crawled out, but then I found scales in the stool of the snake that got her.

Sometimes they can be difficult to get feeding on rodents as neonates, and some tricks (lizard scenting, braining) may be needed if you do not have a good feeder lizard supply.

So it is a good idea to buy one already taking pinkies.

Also - my understanding if you are into locality snakes is that some localities have a tendency to not eat until after their first brumation.

But I probably should let the people who have kept them without them being eaten by a Cal King first answer.

Anyway - the one I did have I shouldn't have bought, since I hope to breed them. I should have been much pickier and paid more for a better quality specimen. OTOH since it got eaten, maybe it is better I wasn't pickier :D

I'll try again with pyro pyro in '08 - and use this season to see what stock is available so I know who to buy from.

I have been keeping this species for about 10 years. The babies can be hard to get feeding on pinkies but once they do they are pretty easy.
Some special things to note is that adults will sometimes fast in mid-summer. They will usually start eating again in the fall for a few weeks then they may go on fast again for the winter.
A humidity box may keep them from fasing in the summer. If they go off feed for the winter you should have access to a place where you can hibernate them between about 50-60 degrees, although they will tolerate brief fluctuations down to 40 degrees.
Their occasional tendency to fast is generally not a problem since this species conserves energy extremely well and the fasts normally cause very little weight loss.
