Just thinking about something......in 2005 I bred 4 males to one female. The group was Corns, but regardless this girl was working overtime in the procreation department.
The interesting thing was some believe that sperm plugs are extremely effective in preventing more than one male from breeding a female...yet we commonly see a male breed the same female many times???? Kind of contradictory no?
Anyway the results of that project were several types of Corns, all similar versions of the fathers. It was really very obvious too, so as usual I find very conflicting answers to questions during breeding season. Maybe some snakes like breeding more than others? Maybe some are content after they feel they are fertilized and ready to search out a nest? I don't really know, who knows what they think...but I do see a change in behavior and it is coinciding with what appears to be a snake cycling to lay eggs. Swelling up with thick tails....and not interested in breeding anymore.
A python breeder advised me once by saying,'As long as there's sperm swimming inside that female before she has ovulated she is probably good to go".
I think the same about colubrids....but it is just guessing...there's a lot to guess about when considering the potential to store sperm for long periods of time too. OK my brain hurts ............. Tom Stevens
