Not a herp at all My fiancee and I just bought the engagement ring (she's even fine with snakes). Score! It's a really nice little thing, although I can't describe it well; diamonds and white gold. It looks great on her.

Congrats! I just did the deed with hubby and had the wedding.

Weddings are a lot like herps. Everything with the word WEDDING on it is 10x more expensive than the same item with out wedding. Check out www.theknot.com for some cool planning tools. I found their budget very helpful. We managed to have the wedding/reception for 110 people for under 5000$. Feel free to ask for some tips. We made a lot of our stuff and saved big time.

We're thinking we'll do the wedding in December of 2004--her folks are NOT comftorable with it,I don't want 20 years of hostile in laws. As for cheap....you talking to da man :D! Her church is dirt cheap for members (preacher is free, building is cheap). The only problem is her dress; we're even keeping the ring set under 500 (a 200 dollar engagment ring, and some silver bands--it actually looks really nice). It's gonna be in Texas, so we'll have some friends and myself get together to do a BBQ for the (dry) reception. I've got some good friends that can design the invites and we can print them ourselves...and there won't be many people, maybe 80 or so.
If you have ANY advice on the dress though! That's the only part that worries me; she wants a real honest to God wedding dress, and none of our surviving family has that skill with a needle. I've looked online and sheesh. Who pays 500 dollars for a one time dress?

THanks for ya'lls well wishes

A few suggestions on that would be prom, homecoming, and bridesmaids dresses. All look very much like wedding dresses and in fact many times pass for wedding dresses. The bad part is however if she is over a size 10, trying on anything will be next to impossible unless she goes somewhere like davids bridal (which is nationwide and has wedding dresses cheap). IF you have one near you, try them. If she is set on a full brides dress, she can do that. Most of their dresses are in the 300-400 dollar range. Mine was 399. Viels, if anyone is good with a hot glue gun, you can do that for under 5 bucks or pay 100 or so for one at a store.

Congrats!! I'm thrilled for you!

Be respectful and deferential with the future in-laws and hopefully things will smooth out with them.

Be patient when looking for the dress. If you don't plan to marry until Dec '04, then there's plenty of time to look for just the right dress at just the right price. It's not uncommon to find beautiful dresses whose designs have been discontinued at rock-bottom prices. You just have to be always on the lookout for it and ready to buy when you do.

Like Cindy, I'm here if ya ever want any help on figuring out all this wedding planning stuff. We did a beautiful budget wedding as well. (A hundred years ago! *LOL* Welll...13 years ago) My mother-in-law made my veil, and like Cindy said, she did it for just a few dollars, but could have sold it for a couple hundred, it was so beautiful. Hmmmmmm.....maybe I could get into the veil-making business???

Blessings to you and your girl!
Judy

I'll take any and all advice into consideration, espically there! *L*
The problem is, it was her mothers second marriage, and her parents are about as old as my grandparents (seriously; her mom's 2 years younger than my grandpa!). And they come from a different culture (mideast, vs. my southwest/colorado). *L* It'll be a trip, but as they've already forsworn offering us any real help, I figure that they have minimal say anyway.
