Smell....

schmuck Aug 12, 2003 10:16 PM

I got a question. I clean my leos cage every other if not every day and replaced the sand. Still smells in my room. Any other ideas to get the smell out?

Your room should not "smell" that bad from the leo's unless your leo's are sick and their stools are causing the smell.

Air it out by just leaving the lid off for awhile.

Or try using a different substrate, because sand was always smelly when I used it.

Yea i agree my friend uses sand and it smells really bad when they go to the bathroom it also is alot harder to clean. Try using paper towels. if you like a natural look then try using slate or iles. That should get rid of the smell. I use paper towels and my room never smells. hope this helps!

I agree with the reply that your room shouldn't have an overwhelming smell from your geckos. I don't know...maybe you just have the Archie Bunker of the geckos, and he/she has really putrid smelling bowel movements. All joking aside though, you may want to check up on that if your gecko(s) is/are continuing to emit a vile odor.

Sand doesn't absorb waste liquid very well... Its silica....It'll soak right through to the bottom of the cage and pool there creating a smell... I use newspaper with a papertowel folded in their bathroom corner for ease of cleaning. Though I'm going to remodel the cage with slate and rocks after I move.. Change the substrate and you'll probably get rid of the smell...I never have a smell problem in my room..and I raise my rats..my gerbils, my geckos and my Savannah Monitor in one room.

I use coconut bedding (bed-a beast) for my leos. I have five in one large cage and don't have a smell problem. Try switching your substrate for a while and see if it helps.
