Pueblan Milk Breeding Weight

gretzkyrh4 Mar 27, 2007 03:19 PM

Hey everyone,
I keep a variety of colubrids and smaller boids, but have recently gotten my first milks, a pair of '05 Hypo Pueblans. I've been able to find plenty of info on basic care requirements and have read repeatedly that they are one of the easiest milks to breed, but I have yet to see any data on minimum breeding weight for females. If anyone could help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Chris

As a general rule, it's good practice to wait till their third year to breed. This helps ensure a good body size/weight and is overall much healthier than trying to "power-feeding" in a "rush" to breed.
around a 500 would probably be what I'd consider a healthy minimum weight.

Last year, one of my 3 year old females was 242 grams when she came out of brumation and weighed 349 grams right before she laid her eggs. She was a good sized peublan as well - over 30 inches long and nice and thick. As with all females, I fed her a ton out of brumation and she put on a little size before breeding.

I agree with Doug, wait until they (females) are three years old before breeding. You'll get a bigger clutch and it will be less stressful on the female.

I'd love to see a 500 gram peublan - that would be a monster!

Good luck,
Dave

Thanks for the replies. I thought 500g was heavy for a pueblan.

Doug, were you thining of another subspecies? In anycase, I'm not rushing them. If they gain enough weight to breed next spring, I'll do it. If not, I have no problem waiting until '09.

Thanks again,
Chris

Good post!! Waiting till they are at least 3 just makes things a lot easier for the female snake. Bigger body size, proper weight, and age will all ensure better chances of bigger and better clutches.
