need help-gopher tort

krim5 Mar 27, 2007 04:50 PM

Okay so I am known around town as the lady with all the tortoises. It happened again, someone knocked on my door to give me a tortoise they no longer wanted. She claimed it was a "spur thigh". It was not. I live in St Pete FL. She said she found it in Spring Hill or somewhere. I believe it is a juvenile gopher tort. I have only seen a hatchling and large adults, so I am not positive. It's body looks like a gopher, but its shell has some yellow in the center of the scutes. It has some major eye problems, they look like they are bulging out of its head. They said they were stuck shut when they found it years ago. THey used steroid drops and they eventually opened but I don't think he can see. Maybe a little, I'm not sure. Here is my problem. I know I can't keep him because of laws. Does anyone know of anywhere I can call to come and pick him up? I don't want him destroyed, I want him taken care of legally. Thanks for any suggestions.

Juvenile (like teenager) gophers look like mini adults, except they may retain some of the bright hatchling yellow/orange.

Good luck. Good luck gettting an ill tortoise into rehab- but you quite definitely don't want to keep it illegally- it's a huge fine.
