Was emailing with Aubrey today, and talking screen names and how they can give you a mental image that is usually nowhere close to reality. Thinking it's time again to put names and faces together. I know this thread has been done in the past on the Boa forum, not sure if been done here or not so........

Please reply with a pic of your self and a quick blurb if you like!!!!!

I'm Dave Colling, been keeping snakes for 20ish years, been catching and playing with them since I was a kid in Ohio. Love the summer and watersports, we go camping and waterskiing every summer. This pic was last year and I have the gopher snake I caught, released on the other side of the lake, caught again back in my campsite the very next day and re-released even further away and never saw again. I took it away from the campgrounds as other people were trying to kill the "rattlesnake" when I caught and saved it.

BTW, all the credit (blame?) for this thread goes to Aubrey (Waspinator...) and I EXPECT her to reply!!!!!

Here is a pic of me with a 9.5lb RAINBOW........ trout ha ha!!! I was fly fishing on the Frying Pan River that is just outside of Aspen Colorado. I fought this gal for about a half an hour. At one point I was running down a dirt road that ran along the river holding my rod above my head trying to keep up with the line that was squeeling out of my reel. Not as pretty as a rainbow boa but damn close.

Well Jamie I think I saw a picure of you when you posted a pic a few months back when you acquired a big female columbian from a friend but I could be wrong but after seeing your pic I would have to say I think I remember and thus wrote this story (just hope it was you by this point in the conversation) but you remind me of a good ole' country boy and you like them rainbow snakes so you can't be that bad of a guy haha lol. Everytime I go to EBN's website and see the initials J.R. next to the hets. I think of you Jamie and I will now end this cuz it sounds a little weird

and...

yes a little weird but that's crazy that you mention those hets because I was going to wait till Monday to post these. This is the female het that is on the EBN site.

I am Jeff Clark. I started hunting and keeping snakes back in the early 1960s. My brother and I had our first baby Eastern Gartersnakes in 1964. We bred Yellow Rats and Corns and Watersnakes the year after that. We were seriously into field collecting and selling and trading through the sixties. We caught just over 1000 snakes in 1969. I especially liked catching and handling big Rattlesnakes. One bite from a Pygmy Rattler convinced me that hot hunting might not be a good idea but I do miss it. We got our first Rainbow Boa, a Colombian around 1968. We sold it and I did not own another Rainbow Boa until I caught another Colombian in Panama in 1989. I was breeding Burms a little back then and trying to get a bunch of wildcaught Boa Constrictors to breed in the early 90s. I captive bred Brazilian, Colombian and Guyanan Rainbows in 1993 and traded the Boa Constrictors for more of them. I bred a bunch of Jungle Carpets but eventually got rid of them to concentrate on Rainbow Boas and again Boa Constrictors. I have 2.5 Surinam Redtails and hope to have them produce babies sometime soon. I currently have six different subspecies of Rainbow Boas.
...I have been married for 36 years. I spent 21 years flying army helicoptors. I retired from that and went back to college in 1993. I am a Registered Nurse but have had a back injury and not worked for several months. I was working parttime at nights for the last ten years before I hurt my back. I was thinking about retiring and this has given me enough time off that I am sure I do want to go back to work parttime for at least a few more years. I hope to soon have surgery on my back and get back to working and kayaking and mountain hiking.
...I also like NASCAR, guns, Randall knives and UF sports.
GO GATORS!!!
Jeff

I'm Paul Buchanan and I've been interested in reptiles (and animals) for as long as I can remember (seems to be the theme here). I started catching snakes at a very early age and hav'nt stopped. I've kept snakes as pets for the past 23 years (a Colombian Rainbow Boa was my first) and have kept BCI, Childrens Pythons, Milksnakes and currently have 5 BRB's, 2 Florida Kingsnakes and a Woma python. I'm a Hydrologic Technician for the US Geological Survey and have been for going on 19 years. Currently I operate a network of monitoring stations collecting salinity and sediment data in San Francisco Bay. I'm married to my second and last wife Seema. We live in Sacramento. I'm an avid birdwatcher, backpacker (give me peaks!!) and my goal is to see as much of this world as possible.
P.S. Those are a couple of Western Fence Lizards in the pic.

Ok you asked for it, here i am on top of the world, the prisons are against the base of the moutain and my living quarters to the left somewhere, Reno NV is to the right out of frame. I live in Nrth calif and started out owning hamsters and it only grew from there. Pets are better company than...er ...well anyway, im happy to be single. This is OSO and I last year.

Do you know Steve Schmitt? He's a buddy of mine who works for USGS out of Sacramento doing, if I remeber correctly, the same sort of sampling you described.

Anyways just thought I'd ask.

Sean

paulbuck Mar 28, 2007 08:24 PM

Hey Sean,
I don't know Steve. I did look him up on the org chart and he is in my building but one floor down. It looks like he works on ground water studies according to the chart; but he is a hydro tech such as myself. If I get introduced I'll ask him if he has a friend who's a snake nut!
Paul

sean1976 Mar 29, 2007 12:09 AM

lol that should be enough even without my name for him to figure out who it is. He gave me a 55 gallon fishtank to use/convert for some of my snakes when he was no longer going to be using it for fish.

If you do meet him congratulate him on the upcoming wedding.

flavor Mar 27, 2007 10:30 PM

Hey all, I'm Mike (aka Flavor),

Like most of y'all, I've been snake-crazed all my life. When I'm not dealing with snakes, I'm volunteering with some other reptile species (worked with Nile crocs in Africa, American crocs in the 'glades, sceloporous and tiger salamanders in the SF Bay area). This summer, I'm going to Brazil to some herp sampling in the Pantanal wetlands. I teach high school biology and coach for our swim team. In my spare time I try to stay healthy by swimming myself. My wife has recently gotten me interested in triathalons. In the pic below, I'm not hiding from the authorities. I'm hiding from the mosquitoes. Jamie, that is a sweet A$$ fish bro. Salmon season is almost here and I can't wait to get out and hook into a few. Cool thread Dave.

Well Mike I didn't know how to picture you even after talking to you a couple of times so I really didn't have a mental image of you but... when I clicked on your post I immediately thought that was a Halloween costume cuz I saw the gear covering your face and at first believed those were short assault rifles in your hands that you were waving around and was thinking Mike is crazy!!! all this happened in a matter of seconds though. So I am scanning your outfit up and down up and down and then I notice you are holding baby crocs and sorted everything out, read your post and was convinced you are the real life JEFF CORWIN (I love that guy and his humor is right up my alley) going where animals call you haha Swimming is great exercise Mike and I was running about 10-12 miles a week but only 2 miles at a time after work but was running under 15 minutes and that gets the heart pumping but can only imagine a triathlon (watched them on t.v. before) will all the people around you and your adrenaline just going through the roof so that is awesome. I did run the Crescent City Classic back when I was 14 I ran 10k or 6.1 miles in 51:22 and I will never forget that feeling of adrenaline when you here the gun fire and everyone is anxious to start running and that is a RUSH!!!

I love carp fishing. I get a lot of crap from my friends since they're considered a junk fish, but I am a catch and release kind of guy and love the fight they put up. Nothing beats hooking a 20 pounder on my homemade dough bait and light line.

This is Zeus and I doing community service. I was stoked that they let me teach kids about snakes to get rid of my community service (I didn't do anything bad I just accidentaly crashed my poor car into a sign) Anyway, Zeus was too expensive to keep warm, so when I had to change apartments i sold the guy. I really miss him. now I only have 2 rainbows. Mercutio and Kajika.

Jeff Clark Mar 28, 2007 10:15 PM

Atheris,
...In the original post on this thread Dave mentioned the perceptions we have about someone based upon the "names" they use on the internet. Because you are atherissquamigera I had thought you would be a badass looking tough guy who kept Bush Vipers. Good work educating the kids about snakes. Whenever I talk to kids about snakes they are like sponges, eager to absorb information about something they do not know about.

I am really curious what sort of mental images my nic gives all you people *grin*

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of myself in a digital format...and i am too lazy to figure out how to set up my digital camera for a timed photo. But will give a small bio.

I have been interesting in reptiles, amphibians and pretty much everything a stereotypical woman should run screaming from. I caught countless frogs (spring peepers, forest/wood frogs, common toads, red back/lead back salamanders, a few others salamanders I can't remember their names. Even found a spotted salamander pair one time. Used to catch garter snakes in the school yard (it was bordering a field/wooded area, great habitat for them).

I have kept reptiles for about 4-5 years now (not long compared to others) and have a fair sized collection. Currently I have 2 brazilian rainbow boas, 4 corn snakes (two normal, two snow) 4 ball pythons( 3 normal females, one pastel male) a leucistic texas rat snake, 5 crested geckos, 4 gargoyle geckos, 2 northern blue tongue skinks, a bearded dragon and a spade tailed agama. ALso a small colony of feeder rats.

well, the parents are sort of pets..but my original parents which I considered pets more, have since passed on, I keep rats 90% for feeders, but as I mod the Pet Rat forum, I have to be considerate to those there who view rats strictly as pets..hence i don't talk about feeding my rats to my snakes. Most there know I have snakes and I breed rats to feed my snakes I just don't rub it into their faces. All a matter of tact.

I do, however, treat my feeder/breeder rats much better than many who breed rats strictly as feeders....they have big cages, and to get some attention. I don't try and put 4 adult rats into a container with a floor space of about 14"x24" and height of 6" and wonder why they don't produce well. *grin* Add 30 babies, and I am shocked half of them don't get trampled to death.

LOL Dave! You made me chuckle pretty hard reading your post, and "blaming" this on me! This is fun to see everyone, and hear about what they like to do. Since I love photos, here is a whole bunch to look at.

These first three are of me. My two favorite hobbies are flying and reptiles, so I though these pictures would be appropriate. I've loved animals all my life, and fell in love with reptiles when I first discovered them scurrying about in Florida when I was really young. I've been flying for about 4 years now, and just getting started on my commercial rating. I've also got lots of other hobbies such as playing the didgeridoo, learning to play the bagpipes, flying r/c planes, motorcycling, archer, and (of course) photography.

Since I love taking pictures so much, I thought I'd throw in these photos as well. They are just a few of my favorite pictures that I have taken.

Haha, I may have gotten carried away with all these pictures!

Well Aubrey, the idea did come from our email conversations. It did get to the point where I was chuckling about the difference between your email addy and your KS screen name. Your email addy gave me the mental image of a skinny girl, pigtails bouncing around on her pogo stick (pogotwig....) Then because you posted on KS about the two babies you were expecting on the exact same day I was sending them, I deduced you were also going by Waspinator... Total different mental image, biker chick with tatoos etc. The names did remind me of the cartoon Rose is Rose where they each have an alter ego.

And the thread was a rounding success so you do get the credit.

BTW, great set of pics!!

Hi all, here's some background info on me... I'm 26 years old. I am getting married in less than two months now, so wish me luck! I have my B.S. in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech (go Hokies!) and am working in Harrisonburg, Va. working on site plan design. Unlike most here, I DID NOT catch snakes as a young child; in fact I was terrified of snakes till about the age of 11, when I had the opportunity to be around someone with snakes, and to learn about them. I have loved them ever since, but could not own any until after I moved out of my parents house. I now have 10 (see list in signature), and always thinking of getting more! I enjoy hunting and fishing (especially surf fishing at Cape Hatteras and for smallmouth on the James River),and watch alot of NASCAR and college football! I'm sorry the pics of me with my buck and my fiance Jennifer and the fish are several years old; I'll try to get new ones posted soon. The other one is one I took at BMS this past weekend, I hope Jeff and the other NASCAR fans enjoy it!

My name's Scott. I've been keeping herps for about 7 years now. It all started with a hatchling painted turtle that still thrives under my care today. Aside from keeping reptiles, I also do some field herping for my state(which will go unknown for my safety...I hope you understand). I go in the field, record what I find, and send the records back to the department of fish and wildlife. This picture unfortunately doesn't have Rocky(I took it here at college because I really wanted to get in on this!), but another one of my passions: the guitar. I just picked it up last semester and can already play Dick Dale's Miserlou(aka "the Pulp Fiction theme song". No lie!

hello jeff, all freshwater carp are catch and release, not sure wot they taste like! I know alot of eastern Europeans eat them tho. They do put up wicked fights your right, just wished they was easier to catch!!!

superdave1781 Mar 29, 2007 07:59 AM

carp are lots of fun to catch! I'll tell you the best way to catch carp...find out where the 17 cicadas are going to be out, and find a lake there!! They turn from slow moving bottom feeders to aggressive surface feeders when the cicadas come out. What me and my dad do is catch a bucket full of cicadas (which takes like 5 mins) and slowly cruise around the shoreline looking for a feeding carp. Just flick one on a hook out in front of him, and wait till he sucks it down! I don't think I've done any freshwater fishing more fun than that!

Thats interesting, I have never surfaced fished for carp. I use a homemade dough bait on a treble. Cast it in and leave the bail open and once they start to smell the bait it's on. I have had days where after the first half hour when all the carp have moved to the side of the lake I'm on you can't keep them off your line.

but can you PLEASE talk about carp fishing in another post? I don't know HOW a picture of me playing guitar has anything to do with carp fishing...I am not a carp...nor is my guitar

I will say we have a small pond on my campus with gigantic carp swimming in it. It's funny how I hear all these kids in my dorm talking about "man I used a spinnerbait and caught nothing today." when catching them is as simple as putting bread dough on your hook lol

I don't have a photo but here is a quick bio.
My name is Jason Miloradovich. I was born in Houston. I grew up in the Bay Area Ca. but have lived in Northern Co. since '94. I have been keeping boas since '96 when I got my first five and got hooked. First was a common columbian from a pet shop and then 2.2 BRB I ordered from Pete Kahl back when he still bred them. That was also before I had any idea of who he was. I got his name from the classifieds in the back of Reptiles Magazine and he was very personable on the phone so I bought from him. (I was very computer and internet resistant back then so I'd call everybody I dealt with.) Right now I have about 100 snakes consiting of BCI (normals and various morphs), BRB's (all normal), and a variety of rosy boas (both locality pure and various morphs, I had four snows born last year, that was pretty exciting), and a small group of rubber boas. Aside from that that I have two kingsnakes, a group of albino balls and hets, one Spectacled Caiman, one fat cat, one dog (Shiba Inu), and a few fish tanks. For my day job I am operations manager for a flooring store. I do a lot of bike riding, fishing and other outdoor things if and when I have the time. And lastly, I am getting married to another animal lover in August of this year who is currently in school to be an elementry school teacher and whose family has been keeping reptiles in small numbers for 2 generations.
