And the Darwin Award goes to....

That one clip is of David Weathers getting bit by a Monocled cobra. You can buy the dvd from Discovery its called "Anatomy of a snake bite". It also shows how Lou Dadono got killed by a big retic.

NajaAnja Mar 28, 2007 01:56 PM

Lou did not get killed, considering he is the one they were interviewing in the Discovery Channel video. He helped them to re-enact the scene with the snake.

Lou is still very alive.

SnakesAndStuff Mar 28, 2007 04:46 PM

Isn't that a forest cobra?

wstreps Mar 28, 2007 05:45 PM

Weathers it was a Monocled. I was there when it happened.

Is the one in the youtube video the same one you are talking about?

wstreps Mar 28, 2007 06:45 PM

Is it the one where Dave gets bit in the stomach ? If it is then yeah it's a monocled . Ernie Eison

LarryF Mar 28, 2007 11:40 PM

I'm pretty sure the sake he's juggling in that video is a forest (doing what they do), then they cut to the scene of him being bitten by the monocled, which you can't really see. Even David probably would have been more carefully if that snake had been acting that way a few seconds before.

The part with the forest also looks like it was cut together to make it looks even more hectic that it probably was...

I would tend to think Ernie Eison was correct about it being a Monocled since he was there when David got bit. David also says it was a Monocled on another video i have when he is talking to the guys from Venom 1.

LarryF Mar 29, 2007 12:57 PM

I was not disagreeing with Ernie. Only explaing (trying to) how the editing work had led to confusion.

The snake that David is seen flipping all over the place in this YouTube video seems to be a Forest Cobra, which he is trying to put into a container with a green lid. That is not the snake that bit him.

Then the scene cuts to him being bitten by a snake in a container with a blue lid in a different part of the room. You can't really see that snake because it happens so fast, but I assume it's a monocled as Ernie said.

yes, it was all editing that has led to this confusion.

Although I have not met the individual who got bit (Weathers), the footage has been aired all over tv numerous times. The monocled cobra was pinned behind the head and was about to be put back into the rubbermaid slide bin. As he released, the snake sprung back off the rear wall of the bin and bit him in the stomach. The footage shown in that little montage just shows the part where he gets bit.

The snake that was flailing all around on the hook was obviously a forest cobra. The video editor chose to put the flailing forest cobra just before he cut to the scene of him being bit by an entirely different snake (the monocled cobra).

So, everyone is right here. He was being bit by a monocled cobra and that was a forest cobra thrashing around on that hook trying to bite.

On a side note, did anyone notice him shake his hand like he was maybe bit by that forest cobra? I am wondering if it was maybe a venomoid. I know the reputation of the individual who got bit and he isn't a "venomoid guy", so I'm not trying to go down that road. I believe Weathers is a legit venomous handler and not showboating with venomoids. That forest got really close to him on a number of occasions, although it could have been angle. Regardless, that snake was pretty insane. Needless to say, I'm not quite up to forest cobra skill level yet and have never worked with one.

So that's the reason there's so many laws governing venomous snakes. To protect idiots like that? Go figure!

I'm referring to the photos, not the video. I'm on dialup so I haven't seen the video.

Aw, don't be so hard on the chap. Obviously he knew exactly what he could get away with. I mean, it's not like those snakes had any weird little pit-like organs evolved to detect micro-changes in the air compared to something's body temp right? Oh wait... Yeah, he's a tard.

LOL!!!

I was young, once, and I thought I was brave. Now that I'm older and a lil' wiser, I realize how stupid I was. But I've just been outdone by this snake charmer.

I've gotta hand it to the fella, though. He's either awfully brave, really stupid, or, a super dangerous mixture of both, brave & stupid.

Another point of view; how many people said the same thing about Bill Haast during his heydays? Although, I don't think this guy's on near the same level as Haast.
