Can I feed cutworms?

kat1204 Mar 28, 2007 04:11 AM

Hi guys,

Just wondering if I can feed cutworms as a staple to my 2 yr old beardie.

Crickets STINK!!!!

Have tried him with silkworms which he loves, but I have had problems obtaining a regular supply.

I have heard cutworms are similar to silkworms but just wanted to make sure they really are safe to feed.

Thanx in advance.

As a staple? Do you feed any veggies?

I personally use crix and mealies as treats. That's all silkworms are to hard to find, and i have never heard of cutworms so i am not even sure what they are. I know waxies, butter, pheonix worms are all as well to be only treats.

I've never heard of cutworms before. Where do you purchase them and where can I get information on them?

OK, I'm familiar with cutworms, but it's not a good idea to feed your beardie ANYTHING caught outside, due to the risk of pesticide poisoning. If you are CERTAIN they are fond in a clean area you could use them as a treat like other worm types. Crickets should remain a staple as the insect in their diet.

I found them on the website for Warwick Insect Technologies.

Here's the site: http://www.warwickinsect.co.uk/

Hope that helps.

Personally i don't kow if i would, and if i did i would only feed as a treat. As said before staple should be crickets with the Veggies!!

I would say don't feed cutworms at all to bearded dragons. As these worms feed on a variety of vegetables, including some that have toxins which the worm can retain, that are harmful to most reptiles, it is very difficult to be sure they are safe to eat. I couldn't find any nutritional information about these worms so can't say how valuable they would be to the bearded dragon.

It doesn't help that there are many species of cutworms, so even more difficult to determine which may be safe to feed to reptiles.

Thus, I rather err on the side of caution and say no.
