Respiratory Infections

Mehen Aug 12, 2003 10:54 PM

Well my new BP has a respiratory infection. I have had her(I think) for about 3 weeks. Well I am taking her to an exotics vet near me on Tuesday the 20th, and I was just wondering how far into a respiratory infection is it untreatable?? Right now she is wheezing and I noticed a little fluid come from the mouth, she doesn't have to open her mouth to breathe. I really love this baby and don't want her to die. My other BP, a yearling, is doing great and I am hoping to find him a mate within the next couple years. I would just like someone to let me know if her chances are high.

Thank you,
Chris

From your description he sounds very treatable... get a culture done to see what type of bacteria is causing the problem and what meds the bacteria is sensitive to.

You will probaby be perscribed Baytril or Amikacin. I have used Amikacin with great results, the only somewhat difficult part with Amikacin is you have to administer it IM, so unless you have help it can be tough.

Keep the enclosure warm, get him on the proper meds and the chances for survival are very high.

I have also only had my baby balll a couple of weeks and may also have a resp. infection. I was soaking it the other day to remove some of the old skin and every once in a while, there would be like a faint poping sound. I can't see any fluid and the noise isin't constanat, but it sounded like a bubble poping but vary faintly. I don't know what it is/was, but it hasen't continued. Could this be the "hissing sound"? I never heard a python hiss so maybe it was a hiss. Anybody have any thoughts?

After a soaking, snakes will some times make that noise due to water in their mouths and/or around the nostrils. If the noise has not continued, I would not worry about it.
