My snake hiding under substrate?? HELP!

abkid Mar 28, 2007 05:57 PM

Hi everyone. I'm new to this group. I have been keeping ball pythons for about 3 years now. Just recently though one of my little guys has taken to burying himself under his substrate (aspen). He never did this before. He is refusing food also, but I found with him it's typical at this time of year. I just wanted to ask if I should be concerned about his new habit of burying himself under the substrate??? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot everyone!

Does he have a hide? He sounds to me like he needs a hide, give him one if he doesnt have one then try in a few days to feed him. I have a young female that is in my rack and still has to have a hide, she will not eat if she doesnt have it.

I know how this usually goes over so I'll qualify it: (IM NOT IMPLYING ANYTHING)but you didn't give specifics of set-up or environment.
So, If you have an under tank heater, check the enclosure temps. May be to cool and he's trying to get closer to the heat source. May also be why he's not eating. If there is no hide, try the hide thing. Again, may be why he's burying and not eating.

Best case scenario, he thinks it's winter and wants to sleep. My smallest male covers himself ever morning and comes out every night. Although, he doesn't have the eating issue.

Good luck with him.

Thanks a lot. Come to think of it, no he doesn't have a hide. I originally had one in there for him, but he never went in it, so I put in a branch for him to climb on and he would hide under that. He doesn't hide under that anymore, so I'll try putting back in his hide box. I feel like an idiot that I hadn't thought of that! Thanks a lot for the replies!!! = )
