Thinking about a snake

Graniteer Mar 28, 2007 07:19 PM

Hello, I am thinking about getting a ball python. This would be a pet, no intentions of starting breeding projects or anything like that. What gender do you think makes a better pet, overall? The size differential wouldn't be a huge issue, I'm just wondering if there are any differences between the general personalities of the 2 genders. Also, is it true that the animal can get stressed out by having an enclosure that is too large? Just a few questions before I go and make a decision like this. I've read the care sheets on this website, but couldn't get a good feel for those two questions. Thanks to all for your help.

Just warning ya, I had 1 snake for about a month & got bit by the addiction bug. 1 ball tends to lead to another & another...good luck!

If you are getting a "baby" from a petstore, you can keep it in a 10 gallon tank.

As far as gender, I dont think there is a difference, just gowith what looks good to you. Like heat said You can start with a ten gallon get a Undertank heat mat, Locks for the lid and plexiglass or something that can cover the screen about 90%, that will help hold in humidty, get a hide or two and a bowl. Balls make very good first snakes. When you get it leave it be for at least a week , that includes feeding it. The get stressed and they need time to settle in. Best of luck, Post pics when you pick one.. And heat is also right about getting bitten, Started with one as a pet I now have 10 and more on the way.LOL they are great thou..

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I know about the addiction part. I have a couple of leopard geckos and I'm going to be getting more this summer. I've always wanted a snake, and the ball sounded like a good start. About what size until it can move out of the 10 gal? Is it a length or a weight issue. And I'll be getting this snake from NERD, they're only about a half hour from me. I've heard some good things about them, and they have a pretty slick store.

I was told that when he gets twice the length of the tank, upgrade.

I want to go to NERD! I will post when I have a weekend in mind. Maybe we can meet up & "window shop" in the snake department.

If you truely only want one snake, stop all research and never come back to this site again. After you see the amazing potential and the variety that has yet to be seen, you will want more, and more and... It always starts with one, and then he "looks lonely". Then you see another that would look good with the other two or came as a package deal with the new friend. Then you become "THE SNAKE PERSON". All your friends start telling you about this snake that needs a new home. 35 snakes later you form a rescue and you realize you only wanted one.

Welcome to the addiction.

As for your questions, get the healthy one. Nice color and pattern that you like. And healthy. A ten gallon will last about 1 1/2 years and that is stretching. It is based on length. When they can wrap around the enclosure and touch their own tail and all 4 walls at the same time, it's way too small.
