How much is this worth?

RalphSnakeMan Aug 12, 2003 11:26 PM

How much could I get for a 11 inch long common snapper? What about a good 18 common snapper?

Thanks for your time,
Ralph

The only reason I ask is because I caught these snappers a few days ago at a local pond and I was just wondering how much money they are worth, which i hope is very, very little due to the fact that they aren't to difficult to catch and I don't want to see them caugh and sold for a profit by some moron with a net...So I'm just trying to educate myself...thanks for your time..

BTW today I caught a 14 inch long snapper that weighed 25lbs!!! It was one sweet turtle

yeah well between the pollution overpopulation and general idocy, wildlife on long island is pretty much doomed.
i once worked with a group to conserve long island turtles, when i lived there. now i think if i found one i take it away immediately (no i don't advocate remooving animals from the wild, i justget very upset when i think about all that concrete and all thos ebber and soda cans).that place is an ecological time bomb.

Id say its worth about the price of its meat. Most black folk around here would be willing to pay $5-$20 for a good sized turtle. I once stopped at a gas station with some turtles I was taking to do an educational presentation at a local school, and I was approched with offers of $20 each for 3 large snappers. I have never sold a turtle, although I did give one away once.

I doubt large snappers are going to be overcollected for the pet trade anytime soon. Pet stores generally need to convince the buyers theyre trying to scam that a 10 gallon tank is ok and that would be really hard to do with a 18" turtle.
