? about Cal Kings

Rob Lewis Mar 28, 2007 09:56 PM

Hello,

This past weekend I picked up 0.2 banded desert phase cal kings. As I look for males, I am wondering what would happen if I paired them up with striped phase animals. Would the results just be a mixed clutch of banded and striped or would I be messing up locality/genetic history? I have been keeping/breeding snakes for about 10 years but, for whatever reason, have just never paid much attention to kings before now. I am really excited about these two females though and am just curious whether or not pairing them with striped phase is a good idea or not. Thanks for any thoughts.

Rob

Since your animals do not locale data I would bet the house they are already mixed locales. So there would be nothing wrong to breeding them to each other. Most all cal kings are crossed locales unless it has a locale name and costs to much.LOL!

Your neonates will not have the white bands that your deserts do as the coastal yellow bands will wash them out.

Okay I just re-read your post. You did not mention if the stripers are the coastal type. If you have striped deserts and banded deserts then thats much better. If you post a pic of the "desert" stripers I would like to see if they are from the borrego area....

actually post pics of them all if you can!

Thanks for the response. I actually do not have the striped yet but I was thinking, since I like both phases, I could do male striped and female banded. I intend to pick up the males sometime this summer (depending on what shows I can get to). I will post pics of the bandeds when I can. Thanks again.

okay so I assume it is a yellow striped and B&W bandeds that you have..

Kerby is correct in the offspring will come out banded, striped, dots, dashes abberant forms of everything inbetween. But I don't think that was the answer to your question. You just wanted to know if mixing locales was okay and it is.

When you breed banded x stripe you will get some bandeds, a lot of aberrancies and some stripes (probably not complete stripes).

Carlsbad, CA area you can find banded, stripe, and aberrant cal kings all under the same boards.

Don't get caught into the trap of trying to label cal kings as either "coasted" or "desert"....as in Arizona they can be found to be: brown with white bands; black with white bands; and black with yellow bands. Very few aberrant cal kings are found in Arizona and I have yet to see a wild-caught stripe cal king from Arizona.

Not all California Kingsnakes are from California

I agree with Kerby. I keep an abbarent female and a banded male (both albino) and they generally throw abbarents and bandeds but I have had a few striped as well. Only one perfectly striped though.
