For those of you using Hatch Rite....

BrandonSander Mar 29, 2007 12:52 AM

Today I received a bag of Hatch Rite for an unnamed company (mistakes happen and I'm not about to get into a hissy fit about little things).

However, the bag had a large hole in the front of it and the medium is now bone dry.

Could one of you who has an unopened bag of the stuff do me a favor and place it on your scale? I need to know how much water to add to this stuff...if you have more than one bag could you weigh a few bags and let me know what the average weight is?

I was really looking forward to giving this stuff a try...but as far as I'm concerned it's no different than other incubation mediums if the "guess work" is added back into the equation.

Thanks ahead of time, everyone.

Hey Brandon. I bought a bag of it on impulse a couple months ago. It says it weighs 2 pounds, so I would imagine that's wet weight. I'm at work right now and can't weigh it, but that makes sense. I'm not even gonna use it. I'm doing the Perlite and egg crate thing, and my eggs look as good and plump as they did when she first laid them. Very clean and efficient method.

could you elaborate on that method with the egg crates or link me to the information....thanks

I have a 2lb. bag I picked up at Daytona last August which now weighs 1lb. 15oz. Haven't been able to get much feedback, so I wasn't planning to use it. I asked on here a couple times and one person said they had to add water later, so if you use it let me know how it works.

Really simple solution, just add water. If it retains water without excess you are good. If it reaches it's saturation point and there is excess water just squeeze a bit out of it. It does not need to be an exact scientific measurement. The medium retains moisture very very well. Evan

Hi, I have an unopened bag and it is 2.o2 lbs. on the scale. Hope this helps and all is well, good luck with you eggs.

BTW... I feel like a real idiot after reading the replies. It DOES say right on the bag... 2 lbs. Duh! LOL

Anyways, I weighed my bag and it came up 200 grams short, but I was also told by the representative from the place I bought it that Hatch Rite cannot dry out. So... either my bag dried out OR the hole in the side let quite a bit out.

The guy said that Hatch Rite pulls moisture from the air and that is why it can't dry out. So, I took the bag and placed it into a large tupperware container along with an extra container with water in it. This way I figure if the stuff "pulls moisture from the air" this will create a humid enough environment for it to pull as much moisture as it "needs" or is able.

I'll re-weigh it in a day or two and let you all know how well it turned out.
