Is this normal??

Terin_n_Tyler Mar 29, 2007 11:43 AM

Hello,
First time post...
My RES that I rescued almost 6 months ago now has parts of his shell with air pockets under them. The bottom of his shell has some shedding as well. Is this normal? I've treated the water with calcium disolveable tablets to make sure that he is getting enough calcium and i've changed his tank to make sure he's got enough land area. But he hardly ever gets out of the water. Is it normal for them to shed parts of their shell? Some parts look irridecent as well. I don't know if I should make him stay out of the water during the night or what to do? Any help would be greatly apprciated.

jade.

What you describe does sound like normal shedding. Sliders do shed their scutes a little at a time & you will see an odd look to loose scutes when they are in the water.
When the scutes fall off if what you see is normal shell.. not infected looking, not red, not a weird color like white, not damaged looking then it is perfectly normal.

The irridecent type looking areas aren't rotting?

Is it irredecent.... (can't spell it lol) looking while he is in the water?
I see that on mine when he's wet in the water if what your saying is what I think.. then when he dries out the scute peels up.
Can you get a photo of it? That would help a lot.
