Been a while since this type thread ran here so, please reply with a pic of yourself and any info you'd like to share.

I'm Dave Colling,
Been keeping herps for 20 years.
I grew up in Ohio and central California and always found cool stuff to catch and play with.
Been happily married to the same wonderful woman for 19 years, and have two daughters, 12 and 15.
Just passed my 25th year service anniversary working for IBM. Wow, can't believe I've been working here so long. Where did all that time go?
My hobbies include woodworking, helps with caging and I even built my own kitchen cabinets from scratch.
I am also into watersports - waterskiing, barefoot skiing etc. We enjoy camping at a nearby lake which is where this pic came from. Some other campers were throwing rocks etc. at a "rattlesnake" I went over and rescued the big bad gopher snake and relocated it away from the campground.

I'm Faith, and I live in SLC, UT with my wonderful fiance Casey. I've been keeping snakes for about 15 years now (more than half of my life!). Most of my reptiles are rescues that we've picked up, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I also have a few rescued ferrets, guinea pigs, and a whole slew of rats and mice (those guys aren't rescues, they're my lil food-makers)

Outside of animal husbandry, my only 'real' hobby is training for a century cycle race... that's 100 miles on a bike I'm an active member of the local 'body modification' community, so I'm into tattoos, piercings, etc. I love hiking and camping too.

This is a fairly recent picture of me, holding the Buddah clock I got for my birthday. I've got longer hair now, and I'm about 30lbs lighter, but I rarely take pictures of myself (the camera's for the animals, not me!)

ChrisGilbert Mar 29, 2007 12:21 PM

I'm Chris Gilbert,
I've been keeping Boids for the last 5-6 years. Boa constrictor ssp. since 2004.
I grew up in Western PA, out in the country and suburbs of Pittsburgh.
I'm currently in my freshman year at Cornell University studying Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
My hobbies include skiing, camping, mountain biking, lacrosse, soccer, snorkeling and fishing. I am also an Eagle Scout.

I'm Caden Chapman

I have been keeping and breeding snakes for 45 years now (my first was a WC garter I caught when I was 9, who produced a litter). My first boa was a rescue in 1980. My first boa babies were born ito the same female and a rescued male in 1985. I have a lot of other hobbies but boas are my passion.

Well since not a lot of people know me here I guess this thread is perfect.

My name is Darren and I've been into reptiles (mostly boas) for about 4-5 years now. (not long at all) Born and raised in Bay Area, CA. except for a 6 month stay in Colorado Springs for a job that eventually laid me off. I've been married for just short of 2 years and have a 16 month old son who keeps me very busy! I don't really have any other hobbies except for my snakes and my family.

My name is Steve and I currently live in New Mexico. I don't post a lot on this forum, but I do keep up with it most of the time. I have been keeping reptiles since I was about five years old. None of my parents were into reptiles, but luckily they were very understanding (let me say again, very understanding)and accepting of my hobby. At age 15, I started getting into venomous snakes and by age 17 amassed a venomous collection of about 20 to 30 animals, including vipers and elapids. I would catch local venomous snakes and trade for exotics. I had successfully bred various vipers by the age 18. Besides local non-venomous, the only other snake I had was a Boa I received as a present when I was 16. At age 18 I enlisted in the US Military to go to the Gulf War and sold off all my venomous snakes. My parents were willing to take care of my boa, so I was able to keep my female boa. After getting out of the Military I started getting more snakes again, venomous and non-venomous. At that point I had two children and weighed the liabilities of keeping venomous, I decided to only keep non-venomous. Up until about 1998 I kept various non-venomous species and in 1999 decided to only keep boas. Since 2000, I have successfully produced boas every year, which has allowed me to reinvest the money and purchase other boas. Currently I maintain a collection of about 20 snakes. As for my first boa, she passed away in 2000. I still occasionally have venomous snakes in my home, most of these are rescued from back yards, but they all get released soon after. I am very excited about this year, because I had some really awesome pairings lined up. If I goes well I should have some very nice babies on the ground starting early next week.

I must say, looking back I was very fortunate about not getting envenomated as a child and I would definitely not recommend a young herper to follow in my footsteps. If you are interested in venomous, get with a mentor and learn as much as you can prior to dealing with any venomous reptile.

boaphile Mar 29, 2007 02:17 PM

Now that has got to be the biggest Boa I have ever ever ever seen! Holy crap! Assuming you are around 6' tall, that animal has got to be past 11' for sure! Maybe close to 12' long! Look how thick that animal is compared to your leg!

Someone tell Tom McCarthy about this one! Wow!

You are right on with her size, the best measurement I could get on her was 12 ft. and she still was not perfectly straight. She is definetly a big girl. Tom already has some pictures of her on his site. Here is another picture of her. I figured you would like the two boas in the second picture with the Jungle. They are related to the litter you had last year when the baby was born with the waxy stool, just a year older then yours.
Take Care,
Steve

Here I am when I was a Kid. My Parents had all of my brothers and Sisters take pictures with our Pets, and this is me. LOL. Notice the Cotton Tie!!! lol

This is my very First Boa Constrictor, and the reason I have what I have today. After hundreds of other snakes, my parents FINALLY gave in to the pressure of the ULTIMATE snake!!! The Boa Constrictor. After proving to them that a Boa had NEVER eaten a Child, they gave her to me for Christmas. She was a Baby, but this is her after a few years!!!!!!

She produced a litter of 26 babies in 1989.

I owe my passion for Boas to TASHA. (My first Boa, and the one in the picture)

So, this is me a 23 years ago!!!!!

LOL, I think this pictures is FUNNY!!!!

Take Care everyone, and I love putting faces to Names....

My name is Jason Gonzalez.

I got my first snake (albino burmese python) when I was 16 and have been fascinated with large constrictors ever since. Over the years I have kept many different constrictors, but about three years ago I decided to work exclusively with the Ultimate in Snakes - The Boa Constrictor.

My hobbies include my family (wife and 2 year old son that I can never seem to get enough of), golf, basketball, softball, and anything else that'll keep me active. And of course, Boas

Did you actually click to see me naked? I'm shocked!

But seriously... I was born a middle class white child in the suburbs of Illinois. Here I am naked as I was when I was born!

Now this was me when I was about 18 months old:

I was so cute back then I could hardly stand myself!

I didn't get my first REAL snake till I was about 24 years old. A Burm at that time. I got my first Boa later that same year. Produced my first babies a little over a year later in 1986. I have had about 50 babies since then.

This picture was taken of me about 8 years ago I suppose:

I never really liked that picture because it makes me look like my head is shiny and bald...

This is a current picture of me doing what I do best; showing off!

and yes, I still have those shoes.

I am currently still on wife #1. She is my best friend, President of the Jeff Ronne Fan Club, closest confident and all that great stuff. I love telling her the cool stuff that is going on with the Boas and watch her pretend that she understands what I am talking about AND try to be as enthusiastic as I am. She is funny. She is not a snake woman. I spoil her rotten with romance and tenderness. She worships the ground I walk on the lives to take care of me and our three kids aged, Jeff Jr. 26, Miriam 17 and Christina 9.

I am currently 32 years old and counting. I have three Boas, 13 Ball Pythons and a corn snake. We have a dog named Bonnie who will lick you to death if you ever show up unannounced. However, the next door neighbor does not lick... We have three cats, Cogi, Flower and Melissa. We also have a couple rats.

Some of this is actually true too...

Did you ever end up moving your store to San Leandro or if it still in Fremont? I've been meaning to stop by, but I had to finish a project that didn't allow me much free time.
I'll make an effort to try and stop by sometime soon, maybe this weekend.

Hope everything is well with you. Take care,

....So I got an e-mail from Steph from work asking why I posted such an ugly pic of her! LOL It is actually one of my favorite pics of us because we had so much fun in Chicago! So here is a better pic of her to make her happy!

A little history on me / us. I have kept reptiles since the age of 10. I got my first Boa at the age of 13 and had my first litter of Boas at 14! I collected everything and anything my parents would let me keep. As I got older my interests would change as all young adults do, but I always had reptiles and always came back to keeping a nice collection of snakes. I eventually found that my passion was Boas, and after meeting Stephanie over 8 years ago, it just took off. She was terrified of snakes when we met, but after a short while she took a huge interest in them and starting handling and even cleaning them with me! She has really helped me get to where we are today as she has always supported me on all my Boa purchases (no matter how big!) and breeding endeavors.
I am now fortunate enough to breed Boas full time and love it! It can be a lot of hard work at times, but every season when we get babies, it really makes it worth it.

JJsBoas Mar 29, 2007 04:37 PM

I initially got hooked on boas back in college when one of my roommates had a pair of boas. I was instantly fascinated, but never did get a boa of my own until I turned 25. I've been keeping boas now for 8 yrs and have enjoyed every minute of it. I currently have 1.3 "normal" BCI, 1.0 albino BCI, 0.1 poss het albino, 2.0 het albino, 0.1 anery poss het snow, 2.2 anerys poss het snows, 3.5 hypos, 1.0 het anery, 1.1 argentines, & 0.1 dumerils (I probably forgot a couple).

Aside from my boas, I went to undergrad at the University of California, San Diego. I worked several years as an accountant in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. A few years of that dreadful "numbers crunching" was more than enough to want to change careers, so I decided to go back to school for a more fulfilling and (dare I say) respectable job. So I first got my MBA, and am now half-way thru law school, hopefully on the track towards a career in business / commercial law. Throughout all this post-graduate education, my boas have been essential in keeping me grounded and sane, in between stomach-turning periods of high stress and anxiety. I swear, just cleaning cages, feeding boas, and sitting in my "snake room" is soooooooo peaceful to me and it's hard to explain that to anyone besides the people on this forum.

Anyway, I'm still single (to my poor mother's disappointment), but have got a great group of friends and family that have been a vital support system during my return to school. When I do have free time (between taking care of the boas and studying, studying, studying), I like to snowboard, mountain bike, do a couple short-course triathlons a year, and am currently training for my first marathon.

It's great to finally "meet" everyone, and good luck to you all during this boa breeding season.

All the best...Jay

I live in SoCal and Im 21. The picture is a little old, but I havent changed much. I now have 17 boas. I have yet to start breeding but hopefully next year will work out for me. I have had a few other kinds of snakes and reptiles in the past, but I have always loved boas the best.

...And I am an alcoholic. No seriously! I quit drinking about 4 years ago though, when I found out my wife was pregnant with my daughter, who's name is also Davey.
I am currently 28, and have been keeping herps since I was 6. My first was a three toed boxie. I bought my first pair of boas at the end of 02, and produced my first litter in July of 03. I don't have fancy morphs, and probably never will (can't afford them) but am very proud of what I do produce.
I was born in Honolulu,HI and raised in Exeter,CA. My parents were both marines, so my big rebellion was enlisting in the ARMY at age 17. I served in the 82nd airborne division, and was deployed to Kosovo in 99.
I am now a plumber, and have moved back to my home town of Exeter. Blahbity blah blah, stuffity stuff.

hey all! My name is Jordan. I'm 21 years old and I live in North Jersey. Had a Ribbon snake when I was in like 5th or 6th grade which passed away after about 3 years... then it wasn't until this past October that I decided to get another snake. I also decided I was ready for the real deal and wanted a constrictor. I was gonna go for a ball python, until I did some research and found out that a boa was more what I was looking for. So now I have Pheobe, a plain ol' BCI, and one of my favorite females in the world. :P She was born in July 2006 and is growing like a weed.

It's great to put faces with names and know some backgrounds of folks here.
My name is Kevin Blumenthal and I lived in Washington State (Seattle, Mt. Vernon, and Redmond) for most of my childhood. I moved to Phoenix in 1986 for college - DeVry Institute of Technology. I bought my first pair of boas in '86 (first pic below), and yes I was a headbanger back in the day!
I have a beautiful 16 year old daughter from my first marriage, who is growing up to be a terrific woman. It's a good thing she didn't get my looks! Of course my shotgun is loaded for all the potential "suitors" who come to the door....I have to admit it's fun to give the "boyfriends" a tough time about dating my little girl!
I'm now living in Northern New Jersey (for the past 9 years) with my new wife of a little over a year. She truly is the love of my life, and I don't know what I would do without her support, wisdom, and understanding!
I think the pics below will show how surviving a divorce and raising a daughter takes it's toll on the 'ol hair, lol. I'm giving The Boaphile a run for his money - a few more years and the grass will be completely gone !
Someday I hope to meet some of you at a few of the shows, especially Daytona. It sounds like Daytona is one big party - boas during the day, drinking at night - it doesn't get much better than that! Best of luck to all this year.

It's been a while since I've posted anything on the forum and I just recently started checking and reading all the new posts lately. Congrats to everyone who's already had boa babies this season. It looks like this is going to be the Albino Motley year!

Things have been pretty hectic these last few months with new projects and keeping up with old ones too. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about and seeing pictures of so many others! These kinds of threads are always fun!

A little bit about me - My name is Celia Chien and I haven't been keeping snakes for that long compared to many others! My first snake was an Amel Corn Snake that I named Valentine. He was a Valentine's Day present and is still one of our breeders. I got him back in 1999. My first Colombian boa was a Hypomelanistic girl a couple of years later and it was all downhill from there.

I was born in Taiwan but moved to California when I was 3 years old. I lived in Anaheim for a few years and then we moved to Northern California where I grew up. I went to college at UC Berkeley and worked at the East Bay Vivarium for a few years while I was in school.

After graduating, I moved to Louisiana where I currently reside with all my Boas and a few other reptiles. My (new ) fiancee, Sean and I own a reptile specialty store in Louisiana and we both work with the collection full time. I thoroughly enjoy all the animals!

My other hobbies include playing tennis (I love mixed doubles!), working out, laying out in the sun, playing with and breeding dogs (Dobermans, Bull Terriers, and Teacup/Toy Schnuazers), amatuer photography, getting tattoos and most recently, playing tabletop miniature games - WarMachines and Hordes baby!

I don't think there are enough hours in the day for all the things I want to do LOL!

Here are a couple of old pictures of me. I got my hair cut recently so it's much shorter now - about shoulder length so I'll have to take some new photos...

Here's another one of my Teacup Schnauzer girls

Well, here goes. My name is Heath Norris and I have been chasing snakes for most of my life, which is 33 years long now. I have a wonderful fiance and a 17 month old son. This is my first year attempting to breed boas, only have 2 pair for this year, working on a few more pair for next year!

It is very nice to put faces with the names of the people here on this forum, great idea.

Here is a pic of me and my 'tobie dog'. He is a lab and newfie mix and is the perfect dog for us. He is also a lot more photogenic than I am, lol.

My name is Phillip Hoerner, I have been out of the herp arena for years, over 20!! When I was 12 I had over 30 snakes in my room and I was in charge of the science lab at school that housed hundreds of reptiles and amphibians. I got the bug back when I tried helping out a reptile rescue by fostering some animals for them. So now I am starting all over again, I never even heard the word morph 20 years ago so its a new reptile world for me! I am like a kid in a candy shop! Brian Gundy has been the most help in my falling deeply back in love with snakes. I was very lucky meeting Brian and I think he is one of the greatest gentlemen I know!! I have also had the pleasure of meeting and getting guidance from Alex Barreiro, Chris Simone, Bob Applegate and others. So I am a newbie when it comes to modern herping. I am looking forward to attending some shows and meeting everyone!!

My story is a lot like most of yours, I grew up loving animals. I always thought that God put them on this earth for me to catch. During my younger years I had caught and tamed every creature I could find. From the baby squirl that fell from the neighbor's tree to the raccoons and possums that I found in the near by creek. My fascination for animals found me working at an animal hospital for 9 years where I worked with exotic animals such as Mountain Lions, Cheetahs (sp), Chimps and African Lions.

I grew up dreaming that someday I'd own my own business breeding and selling snakes. About twenty years ago a friend of mine and his wife came up with the name of for Goodness Snakes and the rest is history.

The friend's that I have made along the way have helped mold and guide me through this adventure.

Thanks for all of your support through the years.

I'm sorry, but I still have a hard time differentuating between Ball Pythons and Boa Constrictors.

Now if you don't mind I have to go and check on my boa constrictor eggs.

To all a great season........

This is Bill Kirby with my friend Rick Cannon(the best tarpon captain in the keys) who is holding a nice little Cuda caught on 10 lb test. Behind me is Islamorada where I spend as much time as possible.

I began with snakes in high school in the mid 70's when everyone had zoo style collections with one example of many different boas and pythons. There was very little thought about breeding then. I was without snakes through college, medical school and residency and got back into it in the 90's when I bought my son a ball python. He was really interested in snakes and we began to go to shows in the mid 90's and decided to start buying and breeding morphs around 1998. Since then my collection has grown and I have been fortunate to produce some nice litters over the years.
I am a surgical pathologist for my day job and spend my day looking through the microscope diagnosing disease with an emphasis in cancer diagnosis.

I am 47, have been married for 27 years and have 3 daughters; my son passed away in 2003. My youngest is 16 and is a professional belly dancer. My time is basically spent looking at slides, cleaning snakes, going to belly dance events and fishing in the Keys as often as possible including one or two trips with Frank Martin every year.
