To anyone w/experience in gargoyles

fattiesnleos Mar 29, 2007 12:08 PM

I bought this little gargoyle about 6 weeks ago and it has been eating and doing well. it is 20 grams now and i was wondering how big does it have to be befor you can determine the sex and be positive about it. it has beautiful orange stripes that keep getting brighter, and was only $119 which i thought was a steal being as i see people trying to sell the common normal colored females for like $200-300. i cant really see any pores because it is a dark brindled color underneath and it doesnt like being in that position. i figure i would rather just wait tell its and adult and just look instead of stressing the poor thing out putting it in weird positions. any help would be great because i am indeed anxiuos to find it a mate.

My gargoyle became obviously male at about 30 grams... These guys are pretty easy to sex when they're mature. They're in the same family as Crested geckos, so if you've ever seen the difference in a male and female Crestie, you can use that as a reference for sexing Gargoyles.

there's a side view of my sexually mature male.

Your gargoyle is positively GORGEOUS, btw! I really love the orange 'highlights' in the pattern, that's really neat...

thanks so much! yeah i know they are very similar to cresties, unfortunatly i have more then i want right now lol. as soon as i get my website going i will hopefully have several fatties and leos available and will come with an optional crested gacko free of charge. i really hope this gargoyle turns out to be male. it will make finding a mate a lot easier but every time i hope something is going to be a certain sex its the opposite. haha
just a pic of one of my female fatties...shes laying now.

I'd love another fattie to complement my Fudge And who can say no to cresties?

I've found that I can sex mine at about 5-6 months of age. I use a stereomicroscope to get a close up view of the pores if any are present. Typically it's easier in Cresties but with a little practice can be done with Gargoyles too.
