How cool is this!

kimhotep Aug 13, 2003 12:02 AM

So - my husband comes in from the rain last night, after a trip to the store. Comes in dripping, grinning, & carefully cupping a grocery-bag-wrapped SOMETHING in his hands. "All the other guys jumped out of the way, but this guy just sat there in the middle of the road! I had to stop the car. & he STILL didn't hop til I got within a couple feet of him!" he tells me.

I have the coolest husband in the universe. He brought me a TOAD!

Take note, guys: this technique might not work for all women

Anyway - here's Henry. Bufo americanus unless someone tells me otherwise, but check out that handsome reddish color. A bit of slate gray on his legs. He's got huge arms & legs! Like Popeye. Very buff, very bulldoggy. He PEEPS at me. He also does some other call, not a peep or a trill. More of a chirble. Not sure what triggers that chirble noise. It's not from us moving near the tank or making noises. He's in a low-traffic area of the house. If he keeps being high-strung & scaredy, he can go back outside. Otherwise I'll consider it destiny

He's the cutest toad I've seen all week!

And, look what was on my windowscreen tonight???

We'll see if I can make him a nice setup. If I can't get my hands on some fruit flies tomorrow, he can go on the porch with a piece of banana in his tank to attract little bugs. I think he's a spring peeper froglet. Sure is pale, like custard-yellow.

Pretty exciting week!

Hey, congrats! You're right...Not too many out there that appreciate toads.

Cute toad!
I love toads also. Right now, I have two American toads, and they are the best, easiest-to-care-for out of all my frogs!

It's not an alarm peep, it's not the mating call...it's a funny little burble somewhere in between the two. He's randomly done it, mostly mornings, maybe 3 or 4 times. No one's moving around the tank particularly when it happens. There's no other toads making noise that he's answering! Just out of nowhere "urblyurblyurgle!" What does it MEAN!

He makes a big scaredy fuss when I open the lid for water changes, puffing & scrabbling against the glass, with sometimes a peep or two. However as soon as I put in crickets, he's certainly not too stressed out to eat them immediately.

Haven't seen yet if he does the toe twitch. Maybe tomorrow, when I get him some waxworms. I'll have him associating the lid opening with Good Things before he knows it...!

The spring peeper (Wally) is good too...gobbling down flightless fruit flies, & leaving tiny frog poops hither & yon. He'll go back out tomorrow when the predicted rain comes. I don't know where his water is, but it's not very near the house. I want to release him when he won't dry out on his way back to moister places. He's a good eater! I've seen him hunting, & like a little puppy, I could see later on his full tummy all round. I value the advice here tho, & I will let him take his chances outside & maybe make more peepers next spring, rather than subject him further to the stress of captivity.

Thanks!

My american toad does that call too, the one where there's really nothing to stress him out and it is not a release call, but it isn't a mating call either. Like you said, when there's no one around the tank, he'll let out a few squeaks. Not really sure why, though, but I guess it's just a "toad" thing

Male toads are somewhat territorial. They will grumble at another male and puff up to make themselves look intimidating (Ooooh, scary!). What that call probably means is, "Hey! Get the hell out of my house before I.... Oh, thats just me. (toads reflection in glass).

How to get your wife to like toads; 1.Get a male toad. 2.Get him to hug your wifes wrist (amplexus). 3. Tickle him so he chirps in protest. 4.Say "Awww, he likes you". Note; Make sure he pees first or you may receive bodily harm during this procedure.
