Hi. I'm thinking of buying a water dragon but my sister would never allow any creature that eats mice in the house. I have heard that they could eat live fish as well. Could these be substituted for rodent prey? I am sure my sister wouldn't mind that, as fish are not "cute".

My waterdragons do not like fish, however, I have heard of other people feeding them to theirs. You can raise your waterdragons on a diet of insects such as zoophobas(super worms), silkworms, hornworms and hissing cockroaches. Crickets are to small for adult waterdragons and should be avoided. Make sure to use a vitamin and a phosphorus free calcium suppliment with D3. If possible raise your own insects this will add to their nutritional value. I had great results with zoophobas fed a diet of dried carrots and collard greens.

Manny people feed their wd's feeder fish. You should be offering *some* type of whole prey item to your wd. Large crickets can also be fed to wd's but not as a main dish. If you are not feeding much whole prey (fish, pinkies, etc.) you should be suplementing with both a calcium supliment and a general vitamin suplement (phospherous and D3 free). If you have sufficent UVB lighting you should not use a suplement that contains any D3 as Vitamin D toxicicity is a major prob. for wd's.

Here's a plan:

Buy a baby WD, they do not eat pinkies for some time. By the time the wd eats a pinky, your sister will be in love with him and SHE might be buying it!
