help finding the perfect frog

ttman360 Aug 13, 2003 01:00 AM

I am looking for a frog to keep that will do well in a 10 gallon aquarium that also doesnt make too much noise. It can make some noise as long as it cant be heard through a closed door. What would be a good frog for me? (except for firebellied toads since I already have a few.) Thanks

You could get some young african clawed frogs. These are really fun to keep, because they have huge appetites, eat like sharks, and grow quite quickly. The females can grow beyond 5 inches. The downside to this type is that you'll need a larger tank in the future, as the frogs grow; 20 gallon minimum. But they are awesome!

It should be noted that in some states (at least California) the large African Clawed Frogs are illegal because of the threat they pose should they be introduced.

I think there already is a breeding population in San Diego.

An alternative to the big ones - and that won't outgrow your tank - are dwarf clawed frogs. I think they only get to be about an inch or so. You could have several in a 10 gallon tank - though you'll need a water filter and some plants.

I think that if you want a land frog that stays in a 10 gallon, shoot for the horned frog. If you want a water frog, I recommend that you get an african clawed frog(please don't get an albino, they are ugly). My brother has a few and they are pretty big, and they can eat a lot. I know that his go crazy over crickets if he throws them in. It is funny, the crickets will keep moving and they are on the surface of the water and the frog starts to swim up and just grabs em. They also eat goldfish regulary. It is a matter of choice, and those are the 2 frogs that I suggest.

I don't own any reptile yet, but I am planning on getting a firebellied toad. I don't know if you want a frog or a toad but I am just recommending. From my reasearch they sound pretty easy to care for and look pretty cool. Good luck.

I live in California so the clawed frogs are out of the question. I also already have a few fire bellied toads which are really cool but I am looking for something else. The three that I have in mind are the Cuban Tree Frog, Whites Tree Frog or Horned Frog. Plus any other suggestions. At my local pet store I saw one called a Texas Bouncing Toad. Has anyone kept one of these or has any expiriance with them? Thanks
